Ukraine voluntarily gave up the third-largest nuclear arsenal in the world, trusting its security to international guarantees. This was solidified in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, where leading global powers — the U.S., the U.K., and Russia — pledged to protect Ukraine's territorial integrity. Ukraine took a step toward global peace, relying on the promises of the international community. But where are those guarantees now?
In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea, violating every possible agreement, while the other guarantors of Ukraine's security responded with little more than "deep concern." This is not just a betrayal of Ukraine — it’s a betrayal of the global principles upon which international security was supposed to be built.
The Budapest Memorandum has revealed that international promises mean little more than the paper they are written on when real action is required. And this should be a mark of shame on every nation that signed those agreements but allowed the aggressor to freely destroy the country that once contributed to...
