Incredible immersive & thought provoking experience, showcasing the spectrum of possibilities when you fuse an art, science & philosophy behind using light as a medium together.
The industrial venue created a great atmosphere & the wide selection & variety of light based artworks captured my imagination. It was magical & brought out the inner child in me.
On the one hand I'm taken aback by the beauty, simplicity & complexity afforded by light when reflected, refracted, rotated & diffused. On the other hand I was curious to understand how each visual illusion was created. This was helped by the artists statements in both English & Hungarian.
If you are expecting a flashy, gaudy, mindless display of excessive lights & lasers you might be disappointed. If you treat this as a museum, take your time to understand the philosophy behind each piece, the beauty & have a natural curiosity it will be a rewarding experience. There are of course many immersive, visually spectacular pieces but walking in & out of the room & taking a few photos isn't the best way to appreciate this.
Take time to read the Light Art Philosophy at the entrance as well. Friendly staff, great atmosphere. I was hesitant at first but I loved it. Allow yourself to get lost, I spent a few hours in there. Might also be suitable for a microdose of plant based...
Read moreVery cool, great experience if you've done the bigger touristy sites and want something different. They recommend 1.5 hours, but give yourself around 2 hours. The best experience is really to read each of the information screens, because many of them add context and details to the display which you would otherwise completely miss. The one drawback is that the screens rotate very slowly between English and Hungarian, which makes it frustrating to wait for the English version. However, if you scan the QR code on the displays you can get to the website for the display and load the English version, often much faster (click on the menu icon in the upper right). It's great unless the link is broken. 😂 Several of the displays are worth spending time with, because the effects are slow to build (like the giant fans). Others are kind of hit or miss. But overall I really enjoyed most of the displays. Very pretty and evocative. There are also lockers to store your bags. TIP: for the moving displays like the fans, try photographing (without flash) with your phone. What your phone sees is sometimes different from what your eyes see, so it's like an extra fun secret light display you get...
Read moreVery interesting exhibition with several light installations and interactive experiences. I liked the pressurised inflatable structure with the video installation you must walk in. We liked to lie on the floor and watch it - I uploaded a video of it. Some other exhibits are intense and educational - if you could read the descriptions! In fact, what I found very annoying are the panels that describe the exhibitions, as they toggle between Hungarian and English, and they never seem to be in English when you reach them… then you need to wait several minutes for them to switch to English and whoever is with you (aka, your six years old…) is already annoyed by the exhibition and wants to move to the next. Some of them seem to not switch to English at all… Another issue is the price - I get it, artists must be rewarded, and luckily there is an internet advance booking and a family ticket and I am not a local, but this exhibition is precluded for many Hungarians. It is okay if you have a salary from Germany… Overall I would suggest it, if you have the time (although visiting all of it will take you at most one hour) and the resources, and are appreciative of the kind...
