Shree Badavilinga Gudi, also known as the Badavilinga Temple, is a hidden treasure located near the Virupaksha Temple in Hampi. This temple is renowned for housing a massive, monolithic Shiva Linga, which stands impressively at around 3 meters tall. The name "Badavilinga" is derived from the Kannada words "Badavi," meaning "poor," and "Linga," referring to the Shiva Linga. The legend behind the name suggests that this large Linga was constructed by a poor woman as an offering to Lord Shiva.

The temple itself is quite simple in design, with a small, unadorned structure, but it exudes a sense of reverence and quiet beauty. The primary attraction here is the enormous Shiva Linga, which is placed in a small open structure. The temple's location, near the riverbank of the Tungabhadra, adds to its peaceful and serene atmosphere, as the surrounding rocky landscape and the river contribute to a feeling of isolation and calm.

Visiting the Badavilinga Temple in Hampi is an opportunity to experience the region’s deep spirituality away from the more crowded ruins. The temple is not as frequented by tourists compared to other sites in Hampi, which means that visitors can enjoy a quieter, more intimate visit.

However, the temple is quite exposed to the elements, which means it can get very hot during the summer months, especially in the afternoon. The stone structure does not offer much shade, so it's best to visit early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the intense midday heat. The temple’s remote location may also mean fewer amenities, so it’s advisable to carry water, sunscreen, and any necessary supplies.

Overall, Shree Badavilinga Gudi is a must-visit for those interested in the history, culture, and spirituality of Hampi. The tranquil ambiance, the impressive Shiva Linga, and the surrounding natural beauty make it a memorable stop. Despite the heat, the peacefulness and historical significance of the temple make it a rewarding experience for those seeking a deeper connection with the spiritual...

The Shree Badavilinga Temple in Hampi is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is renowned for housing the largest monolithic Shiva Linga in Hampi. Here's a brief history:

The temple's construction dates back to the Vijayanagara period in the 15th century, during the reign of King Krishnadevaraya. The name "Badavilinga" is derived from the Kannada words "badva," meaning poor, and "linga," representing the phallic form of Lord Shiva. According to local legend, a poor woman wished to build a temple for Lord Shiva but could not afford an idol. Instead, she prayed fervently and installed a simple Shiva Linga, which later became the Badavilinga.

The Shree Badavilinga Gudi holds immense religious and historical significance, attracting devotees and tourists alike. The 3-meter high monolithic Shiva Linga stands within a small chamber, and it's continuously immersed in water that flows through a channel. This unique feature is a symbol of the Tungabhadra River's sacredness.

Visitors are drawn to the temple not only for its religious importance but also for the architectural charm of its simple yet significant structure. Exploring the Shree Badavilinga Gudi provides a glimpse into the rich cultural and religious heritage of Hampi during the...

Incredible Hampi...!!! This ancient monolithic stone structure of Shiva Linga symbolizes Lord Shiva and is located next to Shree Ugra Narasimha temple. The name Badava means poor and Linga is a representation of Shiva. It says that this temple was built by a poor woman. Hence the name is Badava Linga. It is beautiful and one of the biggest Shiva linga you will see anywhere in the world. At the base of the linga there is a pedestal which is submerged in water as there is a water canal below it. Also the linga is open from above. It is very well preserved and the curves in this linga are so smooth, it's made so long ago. Daily Pooja worship is done here in the morning. Must visit when you are in hampi

Badavi Linga shrine in Hampi is located next to the Lakshmi Narasimha shrine. This monolithic linga is about three meters tall and placed inside the a chamber. The lower part of the linga remains in water which is sourced from Tungabhadra river through a small canal. A close look on this linga can also reveal three eyes of Siva carved on it. Probably this shrine is a symbolic way to portray Lord Siva saving the earth by taking the direct impact of Heavenly Ganga on his hair instead of falling directly on earth. Amazing structure…
