During our trip to Udiapur a few years back, we spent a lot of time around Lake Pichola. An enjoyable activity we tried was the public boat ride that is available at the Rameshwar Ghat in the City Palace Gardens.

The boats we used were basically of the pontoon boat variety, with 10-12 rows of six seats sectioned down the middle. There was a canopy so as to keep the sun off of us during the boat trip, this was quite nice. Lifejackets were provided on each chair and were mandatory to wear. Further, the drivers will quite good working the gas powered motors to move the boat around and did so very gently throughout the boat rides. Both of our boat rides were full and at no time did we feel unsafe at all.

When you board the boat at the Rameshwar Ghat, there may be quite a queue as this seems to be a popular activity, rightly so! Boats were leaving quite regularly so we didn't wait long. It seemed around every 15 minutes or so they would arrive and depart.

The boat first makes it way towards back towards the old city, circling the famous Lake Palace Hotel on Jagniwas Island. This was the one featured in the James Bond classic - 'Octopusy'. It then proceeds to Jagmandir Island where it stops and you are allowed to exit the boat to enjoy the palace grounds. While on Jagmandir, there is a lovely bar area to enjoy a drink and we quite enjoyed the surrounding gardens which you are allowed to explore. A stop of 15-20 minutes is ok but you can easily stay longer if you are enjoying yourself. There were signs pointing to the location for the boat ride pick ups for your return ride back to the Rameshwar Ghat.

Both boat rides were very nice. Taking in closer and ground level views of the lake palaces from the boat were very nice, this was the highlight of the first ride. The return journey allowed you views of the impressive City Palace for quite some time as you approached. We really enjoyed this as well.

In the end, we were pleasantly surprised with this activity. It was originally a lower priority for us but we had been encouraged to give it a try by wise TA Destination Expert - Udiapurmagic. As with other suggestions he made, this was a good one and we were very pleased to have taken the boat ride in the end. It is highly recommendable.

Hint: You can take the Lake Pichola boat ride before or after a visit to the City Palace where the Ghat is located. Best to combine these two attractions and potentially others, like the Crystal Museum if you are needing to maximise your day due to limited...

Gliding across the tranquil waters, with the gentle lapping sound and the cool breeze, offers a unique perspective of the city's architectural marvels. The evening boat ride, in particular, as the palaces light up, is an absolutely magical experience that I highly recommend. It provides an unparalleled sense of peace and romance. The atmosphere around the lake is simply captivating. The bustling ghats, the traditional boats, and the general buzz of life along its banks add to its vibrancy. There are numerous cafes and restaurants offering stunning lakeside views, perfect for savoring a meal or simply watching the world go by. The sense of history and romance that permeates the air around Lake Pichola is palpable and truly unforgettable. However, a couple of minor points prevent it from achieving that elusive fifth star. At times, the sheer number of tourists, especially during peak seasons and for boat rides, can detract slightly from the serene experience. While understandable given its popularity, it can lead to a bit of a crowded feel on the ghats and during boarding. Additionally, while the lake is largely clean, there are occasional instances where some areas could benefit from more consistent upkeep to maintain its pristine appearance. Despite these minor quibbles, Lake Pichola remains the heart and soul of Udaipur. Its beauty, tranquility, and the historical grandeur it reflects make it an indispensable part of any visit to the city.
