Pit Stop Dining If you have seen a Formula One pit stop, the pit crew rushes in, changes tires, refuels the car and it is sent on its way until the next pit stop. Welcome to Bhairo, where courses sit on your table until the crew rushes in, swaps out the finished course for the next and you are sent on your way until the pit stop.
There is also a difference between leisurely and slow. After being seated, we enjoyed the view…and a glass of water…for at least 15 minutes before being presented with a menu. They were out of the Italian wine we tried to pair with one of our mains, no Pinots, but they had Shiraz’s of many flavors.
The pit crew eventually delivered starters and soup courses, although a server forgot and had to return to give the “here is what you have in front of you” speech. Once delivered, both courses were actually quite good.
Upon a server’s recommendation, one of the mains was lamb cacciatore. To my, and all of the internet’s knowledge, this dish consists of cuts of lamb in a red, tomato-based sauce with garlic, wine and herbs. What arrived was Indian-style minced lamb balls (in a “European” restaurant) with a brown sauce. In most restaurants, especially high-end restaurants, if most of a main is returned uneaten, alarm bells go off and staff and chefs have questions. Not here. Time for pit crew course exchanges.
After sitting with our dessert plates finished for 20 minutes and not being offered coffee or tea or an after dinner drink, we walked out. Only to be stopped at the exit by a breathless woman who didn’t want to know if we enjoyed ourselves or the meal, but how were we going to pay. ‘Begrudgingly’ should have been my response, but since the reservation was made through the hotel, and we gave our room number on arrival, a room charge should have been self evident.
This is a venue you really want to love. The views are unforgettable and the service in the rest of the hotel is impeccable. But between the dismal and uncaring service and the misfire on one of the mains, 3 stars is being generous.
