One of the most serene and calm temples located in the heart of Chennai city in Mylapore. A peaceful place with lots of greenery and flowering plants around the campus. An ideal place to spend some quiet time in meditation. It can be accessed by MTC buses and also from Thirumayilai MRTS Railway Station. According to Wikipedia Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai is a monastic organisation for those men who were taught into existence by Sri Ramakrishna (1836–1886), a 19th-century saint of Bengal. The motto of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission is: "For one's own salvation, and for the welfare of the world".The math in Chennai is the first branch center of the Ramakrishna Order in Southern India. It was established in 1897 by Swami Ramakrishnananda, one of the direct disciples of Sri Ramakrishna. Besides Swami Ramakrishnananda, the Math was visited by Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Nirmalananda, Swami Shivananda, Swami Abhedananda, Swami Premananda, Swami Niranjanananda, Swami Trigunatitananda, and Swami Vijnanananda. Sri Ramakrishna Math completed 100 years of service in 1997. The shrine of Sri Ramakrishna set up in 1917 was too small to accommodate the growing number of devotees. The idea of a universal temple was conceived, and Swami Bhuteshanandaji Maharaj, the 12th president of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, laid the foundation stone for the Universal Temple on December 1, 1994. It was realized by temple architect G Venkataramana Reddy. On February 7, 2000, the temple was dedicated by Swami Ranganathananda, the 13th president of the Ramakrishna Order. The Madras Math is today the largest publication house of the Ramakrishna Order. The Math currently publishes 292 titles in English, 333 in Tamil and 17 in Sanskrit/English. The Math published its first major book – Swami Vivekananda's Inspired Talks, in 1909. In the same year was published Swami Ramakrishnananda's Universe and Man. In 1909 came his next book Krishna: Pastoral and King-maker followed by The Soul of Man in 1910. The Math publishes 2 monthly journals: The Vedanta Kesari in English and Sri Ramakrishna Vijayam in Tamil. The Vedanta Kesari was started in 1914 and has over the years built up a good reputation for its authenticity and scholarship. Sri Ramakrishna Vijayam, started in 1921, has today the largest circulation among religious journals in Tamil. A charitable allopathic-cum-homeopathic dispensary with general, dental, eye, ENT, surgical, X-ray, ultrasound scanning, paediatrics, ECG, gynaecology, physiotherapy and laboratory sections, and clinics for TB and diabetes is run by the math on the campus. About 220,000 cases are treated annually. A weekly mobile medical unit, which treats 10,000 cases annually. Donations are accepted by the Math which are used to support its various activities like publications, medical facilities, education, flood relief and...

Meditation is an art to forget, forgive and thereby connect with the supreme power – the Almighty. It works like a magic wand and brings peace and positive energy, rejuvenating mind and soul. Sri Ramakrishna Math in Chennai provides the right ambiance and silence that is essential for meditation. Inspired from the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda, the Ramakrishna Math preaches secularism and, thus, is also called the Universal Temple.

The magnificent architecture reflects a blend of traditional Dravidian, Hindu, Buddhist and Jain styles of architecture. From its 60-feet tall gateway, one can possibly see the central tower (Vimanam) and the sanctum sanctorum (Garbha Mandira). The forecourt of the Ramakrishna Math is very Mughal in its styling with wide lawns, broad and colourful pathways and ornamented parapets.

The white marble statue of Sri Ramakrishna seated over a lotus, in the Garbha Mandira looks elegant. There are also shrines of Sri Sarda Devi and Swami Vivekananda on either side of the Garbha Mandira. There is also an auditorium dedicated to Swami Ramakrishnananda where satsang (spiritual talks) and bhajans (spiritual songs) are conducted. The central stairway adds to the beauty of the temple and lands in a wide portico (Mukhamandapam) that is supported by four columns, each of which is intricately decorated. The main prayer hall has adequate provisions for light and air with large windows and doors. The Vimanam is at a height of 102 feet and thus dominates the entire structure.

Besides this, the Math offers charitable medical and rehabilitation services. The temple is open to people from all religions, sect or creed and thus is universal in the...

Sri Ramakrishna Math in Chennai is one of the prominent branches of the Ramakrishna Order. Founded by the disciples of Sri Ramakrishna, a renowned Indian mystic of the 19th century, the institution upholds the teachings of universal love, selflessness, and the harmony of religions.

Situated in the heart of the bustling city, the Math offers a peaceful oasis that is both spiritually invigorating and aesthetically pleasing. The temple architecture, inspired by traditional South Indian design, provides a serene atmosphere conducive to meditation and contemplation. The well-maintained gardens and serene ponds further elevate the ambiance.

The Math conducts regular pujas, aratis, meditative sessions, and special events during festivals. This ensures that visitors and devotees have ample opportunities to imbibe the teachings and participate in group spiritual activities.

There's a well-stocked bookstore with a range of books on Vedanta, Ramakrishna-Vivekananda literature, and other spiritual topics. The Math also runs schools, colleges, and other educational institutions...

The main temple is a big beautiful piece of architecture in white marble. The wide foot-steps which take us to the main entrance of the temple whose architecture is a confluence of Jainism, Buddhism and Dravidian style. The four high pillars columns are 60 feet in height giving a feel of the Roman architectural style. The old temple dedicated to Sri Ramkrishna and Sarada Ma, is also a great place for quiet contemplation. The Lawn looks more influenced by the Mughal style with a colourful pathway decorated with parapets. An oasis in the middle of a busy city. How to reach there? Nearest Bus stand: Sanskrit College, Mylapore & Luz corner bus-stand. Nearest Train stations: Thirumayilai (also called Mylapore) & MundaKanni Amman Kovil. These stations are located on Velachery-Chennai beach local train route. Visiting timings: (No Entry fee) 05:00-11:45 & 15:00-21:00.
