Church of Our Lady 'delle Vergini' — Attraction in Matera

Absolutely Breathtaking place.

Be prepared though: Comfy shoes and if you gotta go by car as close as possible to the top (at the church) you gotta drive REAL SLOW or you’ll break your car. Or else you can park it a bit before and walk your way there.

I was there close to sunset time and it was spectacular. Pictures do not give it justice.

The church only opens once a year, on the first Sunday of may. So do not expect for it to be open.

Takes just over an hour to walk here from Matera. Be aware that there is a very steep hill to go down, then flat for a way, then steep incline again and another bit to climb to get to the site.

There are also caves around the area to explore by foot. The church is almost never open but there is a little church before you get to the main site that has a window in it so you...

Luogo ricco di fascino, con caverne scavate dall'uomo, come sono i sassi di Matera se "smontati" della parte in muratura. Abbiamo seguito le indicazioni per il centro visite della Murgia che purtroppo era chiuso ma senza nessuna indicazione. Se andate in estate è consigliabile portare una buona scorta di acqua e scarpe per camminare in quanto, pur essendo presente un parcheggio alla fine della strada asfaltata, inspiegabilmente c'è il divieto di accesso per cui ci sono circa due km da fare a piedi lasciando l'auto in uno spiazzo sterrato accanto ad una struttura abbandonata, forse un altro annesso del centro visite. Nonostante ciò, il luogo vale davvero la pena di una visita, meglio al tramonto. Panorama sui sassi di Matera e sulla gravina.
