The church is located in Piazza San Paolo on the banks of the Arno and was built in the year 805 for the Vallombrosan monks. Elegante Chiesa alle porte di Pisa in fase di ristrutturazione. Si inserisce nella fase del Romanico-Pisano fondata nel 925 e attestata nel 1032. Appartenne ai monaci di san Benedetto e dal 1092 fu sede dei monaci vallombrosani. In seguito la chiesa e il monastero furono affidati in commenda al cardinal Landolfo Marramauro e, nel XVI secolo furono assegnati all'Ordine dei cavalieri di Santo Stefano. Con la soppressione dell'ordine, la chiesa divenne parrocchia. Dal 2012 è chiusa a causa delle condizioni precarie. Dall'ottobre 2016 è iniziato il restauro anche grazie ad una campagna di crowdfunding. La struttura è a croce egizia absidata con tre navate e cupola all'incrocio del transetto. All'esterno, nel rivestimento marmoreo a fasce bicrome sono reimpiegati marmi romani, che tuttavia non seguono tutto il perimetro della chiesa, lasciando intuire la presenza dell'attiguo convento dei frati, oggi scomparso, sul lato meridionale dell'edificio. La facciata a due spioventi, con lesene, archi ciechi e tarsie marmoree e tre ordini di logge, con cornici marcapiano scolpite, fu completata nel XIV secolo da Giovanni Pisano. L'interno, articolato per mezzo di colonne e archi lievemente acuti, è assai spoglio ed il soffitto è costituito da una leggera orditura lignea a vista.
