beautiful but demanding. This is not a path for people with mobility problems or those who spend their days on the couch :) The path, whether you start from Riomaggiore or from Manarola, consists of 99% of very steep stone steps. sometimes it's not even stairs, but protruding stones that you have to walk on carefully. If someone often walks in the mountains, it will probably not be a difficult trail for him, but people counting on an easy, nice walk with a nice view will be disappointed and may not be up to the challenge. it's important to have a lot of water and good shoes with you - we saw people in flip-flops and it was dangerous - it's easy to injure your leg, especially when going down. beautiful views :) don't believe google that the route takes 30 minutes. it takes well over an hour, provided you don't make too many stops along the way. on the downside - poor marking in Riomaggiore and Manarola indicating the beginning of the trail, without google we would not have found it. the beautiful thing is that you walk between gardens and plantations of vines,...
Read moreOkay so we walked/climbed the trail from Manarola to Riomaggiore after having walked from Manarola to Corniglia via Volastra the previous day. I must say the hike to Riomaggiore was much less scenic than the other, harder and much less enjoyable. Okay if you want to say you’ve done it fine. However I think save your knees and either take the ferry or train the one stop. Though I can truly recommend the hike to Corniglia, it was 2 hours but the terrain is kinder though steep, the views breathtaking! A stop in Volastra was a pleasant pause and a chance to see accommodation that is not over crowded with incredible views with peace and quiet if that’s your thing. In any case enjoy...
Read moreWe walked from Manarola to riomaggiore. The path offers lovely views of the sea and of Manarola (and still nice, but not optimal, views of riomaggiore).
Steep stairs basically all the way up and all the way back down, though going this direction we did have handrails for large parts of the descent. You will need to be pretty fit, and not have bad knees, but other than that it is pretty doable. Though everything may be more slippery when conditions are wet.
Quite some mess/garbage had sadly been left along the edges of the trail. Looked like a...
