Wonderful palace, mostly either unchanged since or restored to the situation of several centuries ago. That includes the hanging of the (many hundreds of) paintings in a very symmetric pattern, with little or no regard for the subject matter or who the painter was. There are several masterpieces by Breughel, Velazquez, Caravaggio, and others, including some sculptures by Bernini. A few sentences cannot do justice to this collection.
The (free) audioguide is fantastic. It gives details on the history of the palace and the collection, including the link with pope Innocent X, but also on quite a few of the paintings and sculptures. Apart from the paintings and sculptures of the renaissance and baroque, there are some medieval works (mostly added to the collection about a century ago) as well as finds from ancient Rome that will take your breath away - for example the young centaur in two coloured marble and a quite ancient statue of Bacchus.
It was pleasantly uncrowded when I visited on a Monday morning in July, with only a few people in each room, even though there was no shortage of tourists at other places in Rome, and I spent a happy two and a half hours here. Online booking may not be necessary but it gives you a specific entry time, so if you are planning ahead why not do it.
All I have left to say...
