Libreria Acqua Alta** in Venice is one of the most unique and charming bookstores in the world, beloved by both tourists and locals. The name "Acqua Alta" translates to "high water," a nod to Venice’s frequent flooding, which the bookstore is creatively designed to withstand. Here’s a breakdown of typical experiences: ### Pros: 1. Unique Atmosphere**: The bookstore is a visual and sensory delight, with books stored in bathtubs, gondolas, and other waterproof containers to protect them from the flooding. The interior is a quirky, maze-like setup, with stacks of books in every nook and cranny. 2. Scenic Views**: The back of the store opens up to a small canal, offering a peaceful view. There’s even a staircase made of old, unsellable books that leads to a viewpoint overlooking the canal, a popular spot for photos. 3. Charming Décor**: The store’s atmosphere is full of personality, with cats lounging among the books, vintage posters on the walls, and Venetian-themed décor throughout. It feels like a literary treasure hunt. 4. Selection of Books**: While the store specializes in Italian books, there is also a decent selection of English and other foreign-language books. The collection includes everything from new titles to secondhand books and even maps and prints of Venice. 5. Cat Companions**: The store is home to several friendly cats, adding to its cozy and welcoming vibe. Many visitors enjoy their presence, as they lazily lounge around the shop. ### Cons: 1. Overcrowding**: Due to its popularity, the bookstore can get quite crowded, especially during peak tourist season. The narrow aisles and limited space mean it can sometimes feel cramped. 2. Organization**: The store’s chaotic, haphazard organization adds to its charm, but it can also make it difficult to find specific books. It’s more a place to browse and stumble upon hidden gems than to search for something specific. 3. Tourist-centric**: While it’s a wonderful spot to visit, some travelers feel that it has become more of a tourist attraction than a traditional bookstore, with crowds sometimes overshadowing the experience. 4. Prices**: Some visitors note that prices, especially for souvenirs or unique items, can be on the higher side, as is common in Venice. ### Overall Experience: Libreria Acqua Alta** is more than just a bookstore—it’s a one-of-a-kind cultural and artistic experience. If you’re a book lover or someone who appreciates quirky, offbeat spots, this store is a must-visit. While the crowds and lack of organization can be frustrating for some, the atmosphere and uniqueness make it a magical stop for most visitors.

Review of Libreria Acqua Alta - A Quirky Literary Haven in Venice Venturing from London to Venice, I was intrigued by the city’s cultural gems, and Libreria Acqua Alta, a renowned bookshop, was high on my list of places to explore. Pros: Libreria Acqua Alta’s unconventional ambiance immediately caught my attention. The books, stacked in bathtubs, crates, and even a converted gondola staircase, created a captivating maze of literary wonders. Each corner held a promise of hidden gems, making the experience akin to a literary treasure hunt. The shop’s embrace of Venice’s aquatic setting was evident, with books creatively incorporated to form benches and steps that led to a charming canal-side reading corner. It offered a unique glimpse into the city’s soul, with books and water intertwined harmoniously. Cons: Due to its popularity, the shop can get quite crowded during peak tourist seasons. Maneuvering through the narrow passages amidst fellow visitors can be a tad overwhelming, particularly for those seeking a tranquil reading environment. For travelers with mobility concerns, the uneven surfaces and tight walkways might pose challenges. Navigating the layout may require extra caution. In essence, Libreria Acqua Alta promises an unmatched and memorable experience for book aficionados. Its imaginative arrangement of books and its reflection of Venice’s essence make it an exceptional stop for any visitor. Just be prepared for the bustling atmosphere and allow yourself the time to immerse in the shop’s distinctive charm.

I've loved the place but hated the experience. It became one of the most "instagramable" places in Venice and it is understandable why, the place is gorgeous and unique. On the other hand it "forgot" how to be a library, people who loves books like me we would love spend at least 20/ 30 min around, looking the books, selecting some books and other items to happily purchase them but all you have is a few sec for a photo or two feeling like you are disturbing the others.🥺 I've waited patiently for the other person to take a few photos, some one rudly interupted her then I had my time but then the person behind me did no have any, not fair, she should have been back to the queue for tge photo but anyway it's not fair.🥺 When you come out of the places for the photos people are indirecly pushing you out, there is no time for the real library experience. 🥺😢📚 I've loved the cat but there is no time to pet him either. 🥺🐈⬛ ➡️ I would suggest to make a short blocking queue at the entrance, giving people inside at least about 15 min to look arround and while one or two come out, it would be allowed to 1 or 2 to get in. ➡️ If you are going to visit, have your photos ready in mind, do it as quickly as you can and go back there a second time only to try to look around, pet cat and look at/ buy books/itens but keep always in mind there is no much time. 🥺🐈⬛📚

I’ve wanted to visit this place for a long time so it was high on my list during my Venice trip! The shop is easy to find and really feels quite magical. There is a rule that you must carry backpacks in your hand, not on the back. They are strict about this and it makes sense because the shop and the layout is very narrow, and you could damage the books easily. Even worse when the shop is busy and there are lots of people trying to squeeze through. The famous book stairs are at the back, with a view over the gondola which you can sit in for a photo. During my visit the gondola and some part of the shop was actually not accessible without water shoes since the water was so high! So don’t be disappointed if your timing is unfortunate. I thought it was amazing so I didn’t mind but I know some people will be sad to miss the photo opportunity. There are so many books and I was surprised to see they even have some sections of English and French books, maybe other languages too. They also have very cute children’s books in several languages. I was able to meet one of the shop cats, and I bought some souvenirs here. They have a lovely selection of magnets, bookmarks, notebooks and other gifts, which was great since i did not have baggage room for a book.

this bookshop was absolutely stunning! it’s renowned as one of the best in the world, and after visiting, i can confidently see why. the shop is packed with a vast collection of books, including a dedicated section for english titles. they also offer a variety of souvenirs like bookmarks, posters, and postcards, making it a great spot for book lovers and travelers alike. the resident cats at the counter were an adorable highlight. they felt like the bookkeepers of the store, adding even more charm to the already enchanting atmosphere. unfortunately, the only downside was how crowded it was during my visit. the large number of visitors made it feel a bit stressful, as we were ushered along and asked to keep moving, leaving little time to fully soak in the beauty of the space. there’s a designated path you have to follow, and if you’re not purchasing anything, you’re quickly directed to the exit (though the exit does feature a lovely, photo-worthy spot). overall, it’s an incredible place worth visiting, but the experience can feel rushed and less enjoyable when it’s packed. try to visit during off-peak hours if you can to truly appreciate its magic.

The sign says the most beautiful bookstore in the world (they haven’t been to Shakespeare and company). It could be charmful, but it felt like a musty smelling tourist trap. We were greeted by an unfriendly lady in a loud voice telling us to put our backpack in the front. Not a “welcome to Acqua Alta we’re so glad you’re here”. Then we didn’t see one cat. The same lady who told us about the back packs was also talking about “territorial cats”. We roamed around a bit. It was crowed - in the back of the store was a line - for pictures on piles of books. Once again with another staff giving loud directions of what to do and not to do “don’t sit, one picture - move on and no purchase customers exit here (at the back of the store). They only wanted bag carrying customers to exit the front of the store. So the good things. Like the reviews say. There are lots of photo ops. But maybe pick a day when the staff woke up on the better side of the bed or at least don’t expect to be treated well.
