Whether you want to pay the price for a round trip up, take a hike down, or hike up and down, this is a great place to do it. With stunning views of Mt Fuji, it is a great picture taking spot.
The food is a bit expensive, but very good. The usagi dango (rabbit dumplings, but don't worry! They're not rabbit!) was one of the best sticks of dango I've had in Japan. This is impressive considering they're not exactly handmade. If you've never tried dango, this is a good place to start.
The views of Mt Fuji are amazing and even if it's too cloudy to see the mountain, the view of the surrounding area is still beautiful.
If you like hiking, there are plenty of options, from easy to more difficult hikes (though nothing too crazy. If you're really looking for a challenge, hike Mt Fuji itself)
It is a bit of a tourist trap, but one that's worth it, I'd say. The round trip on the highline is only about 8 USD and there is always the option to hike to the top instead. The hike to the top isn't that difficult either. And people wise, it doesn't get oppressively crowded. I visited in New year's and while it was crowded (expect an hour wait for the highline on a busy day), it wasnt bad.
Watch out for the weather though! The area is known to get struck by lightning often, so play it safe if you're there in summer especially. Winter is a great time to go because the temperatures are now mild and there isn't a real threat...

Kawaguchiko Tenjoyama Park is an absolute must-visit when in the Fuji Five Lakes region! The short but scenic Kachi Kachi Ropeway ride whisks you up Mt. Tenjo to a viewpoint that genuinely took my breath away.
Why it’s 5 stars: ✨ Unbeatable Vistas: The panoramic view of Mount Fuji towering over Lake Kawaguchi is iconic and utterly magnificent. Clear days offer postcard-perfect photos, but even with some clouds, the drama is stunning. ✨ Charming Atmosphere: The park itself is delightful – meet the playful tanuki (raccoon dog) statues, ring the "Bell of Tenjo" for luck, and soak in the folklore (Kachi Kachi Mountain). ✨ Iconic Treats: Don’t miss the dango (sweet rice dumplings) from the shop at the top – enjoying them while gazing at Fuji is a quintessential Japanese experience! ✨ Easy Access: The ropeway is efficient, runs frequently, and the journey is part of the fun. ✨ Well-Maintained: Clean facilities, clear signage, and friendly staff.
Tip: Go early in the morning (right at opening!) for the clearest views of Fuji and smaller crowds. Also, check the live webcam before heading up if visibility is...
Read moreIf you plan to go up the ropeway while you are in Kawaguchiko, I suggest doing it as early as possible. We got there at 10:00 am and the wait was about 15 minutes and there was an amazing view of Mt. Fuji. When we left around noon the line was 3x as long and Mt. Fuji was covered in clouds.
TIP #1: the line on the right side of the stairs is for buying tickets. The line on the left is to board the tram. Buy your tickets first.
TIP #2: Beer at the snack bar is 550 yen for a small draft beer in a cup but you can get a can beer at the souvenir store next door for 310 yen. The fried chicken was really tasty.
TIP #3: The prices at the souvenir store at the top was cheaper than the store at the bottom.
TIP #4: Don’t forget the viewing area on the roof top of the souvenir store. Also, it’s worth the climb up the hill to the observation deck if there is still a view.
TIP #5: There is a guy that will take your picture with your camera for free as long as he has a chance to take one with his camera. 1200 yen if you...
