I was skeptical about booking this place after seeing some of the negative reviews. However, I took a chance and I'm glad that I did because this place was a good find! The location was great since Lake Kawaguchi is right in front of the ryokan, about 1-2 min walk. There's also a Lawson right beside. There's a free shuttle ride included that you can take from Kawaguchiko Station to the hotel and the same going back when you checkout. You can avail of the shuttle service by letting the person in the "Tourist Information" counter in Kawaguchiko Station know that you are staying at Yamagishi Ryokan and they will call them to pick you up at the station. Just a heads up that the staff speaks very little English. Regardless, their service was pretty good and the staff were also very nice. The room we stayed in was clean. We had a private shower and toilet. The toilet was very much well equipped compared to hotels we stayed at in other cities in Japan. The room was also spacious. Spare pillows, blankets, and even an extra futon were available in the cabinets. I'd definitely book this place again. Overall, highly recommend!

Arrived early and the staff spoke enough English to let us check in and leave our luggage so we could explore around the area. Was worried because my brother booked it before I could read the reviews but I had a great experience. The bathroom and shower area were a little musty but nothing opening doors didn't fix. The futons were fluffy and not thin at all and cozy for chilly winter nights. Didn't get any meals at the Ryokan as we wanted to explore the area for local food (though we were honestly too tired after all the activities around the lake so the Lawsons beside it was a staple). The onsen was nice and relaxing after hours of walking. Might be too small for some but there weren't a lot of people at the time that I was there so YMMV. My only regret is not using the outdoor area onsen. I’d book here again if I'm in the area and I can't wait!

Do not stay here unless you like to be threated like an animal or like to sleep on the floor - More details to follow.

First, as I write this email, I really feel a lot of pain in my neck and back.

Check-in: They cannot communicate in english, instead they provide you A4 sheet with the floor plan and some information about the hotel. PLEASE read it all. I missed to read the LAST line that says "The checkout is at 10:00". I will come back to that later.

Breakfast: During checkin you have to choose between 07:00, 07:30 or 08:00 to have your breakfast. So if you are not planning to wake up that early, do not include breakfast to your reservation.

Room: I have been in Japan many times and I am quite used to sleep on futon, but the ones in the room were so thin, I mean so thin, that basically you are sleeping on the floor. I did not manage to sleep for the two nights. The seats were torn and stained, so I did not even tried to seat on them to enjoy the lake view. The wall papers were also torn and the entire thing looked old and outdated.

Checkout: As i mentioned before, I was not aware that the chekout time was 10:00 am. As a frequent traveller, most if not all hotels I stayed in my life have the checkout 11:00 am onwards. I had just finished to take shower around 10:30 when someone knocked my door to say that I was late to checkout, then I asked 5 minutes to pack my stuff. 30 seconds later a man knocked the door really hard, then open the door and demanded us to leave the room. I was with only my pants on and again I asked him 5 minutes. He said no and demanded us to leave the room as we were. I asked again for 5 minutes and he demanded us to leave!

I and my wife just closed the bags and left the room and he closed the door behind us. I was barefoot, holding my shoes in one hand and the tshirt on the other, wearing my pants with the belt not buckled and open jacket. Mercilessly we were escorted to the elevator. I had to dress myself in the reception hall and while i was doing that, the same guy that scorted me, said with a rude voice "pay, pay". I came to the reception and he showed me a paper written in japanese and the value of 2.000 yen. I asked what was that and he only was able to answer in japanese. After a few back and forth, he went inside to bring someone that explained me that was a fine for "overstay". She showed me the A4 sheet that I was presented during the checkin, and the last line shows that the checkout is at 10:00 am. So what? Should I assume now that I am a animal or a criminal, to have to leave the room even without having the opportinity to properly dress. I have never heard of such a situation for being 30 minutes delayed to checkout and I have never been so mistreated in my...
