The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise on the old pirate ship offers stunning scenery over Lake Ashi, making for a memorable experience. Although we were unlucky with the weather and couldn’t catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji due to the clouds, the lake and surrounding views were beautiful. However, our experience was marred slightly by getting stuck at the top of the cable car for over an hour due to the large crowds trying to descend. Additionally, the last boat back to our accommodation left at 4:25 PM, which felt a bit early—especially during peak periods when extending the schedule to 5 PM would be more convenient. For those planning a trip, I’d recommend doing a one-way loop around Hakone instead of a return trip to avoid the crowds, particularly if you're staying in the area. Despite these minor issues, we really enjoyed the overall experience and would recommend it to others visiting Hakone.

The Pirateship Cruise forms an essential part to the sightseeing 'ring' in Hakone. This involves catching a bus from Hakone Train station to this cruise ship, sailing across the lake to the ropeway, leading you to the cable car tram, and then a bus back to the Train station. A 'Freepass' gives you access to all these modes of transport for around 5000 yen for adults and is recommended. Arriving at the southern pier and seeing the boarding line snake through the building and out the entry door was a little daunting, however we were pleasantly surprised that we and everyone in front of us managed to board the next ship that arrived. There are opportunities to see Mt Fuji on the cruise, especially if you upgrade your seating status to be in the VIP area at the front of the boat. There's also a small bar and restroom amenities on board.

Make sure the weather is good before buying the train tickets and the Hakone Pass. Getting to Hakone is quite an ordeal as you have to take local train when you get to Hakone Yumoto. Hakone funicular and ropeway are quite expensive and is only sensible if you plan to stay for 2 days in the Hakone area. From Shinjuku you will need to take JR line to Odawara and transfer to Hakone's own local line. The other way from Shinjuku is to take Odaikyu Rail line via Romance Car which gets you to Hakone Yumoto. One day route is a bit sketchy if there is a big crowd on a clear day. It is not worth going in such days as the lines for each ride takes so long. I would avoid this excursion during peak times such as fall leave season.

You need to take a bus from Yumoto to get here it’s around 40 to 50 mins . The sightseeing cruise is included into your Hakone free pass ticket but as a travel hack, pls pay for first class upgrade , you get to cut the lines , board the ship first . The best part of first class you get access to a cordoned off portion on the 2nd level and top level sight seeing deck . You have the best view at front of ship without squeezing with rest of crowd . At time of week early nov it’s 700Yen per pax for upgrade. Boat will take you from Motohakone to Togendai and from there you will take the cable car to Owakudani, than rope line onwards back to Yumoto .

The cruise is very interesting. Offering great views to fujisan, heiwa no Tori, etc. from ashinoko. Entry is a bit easier with hakone free pass, and first class tickets can be cheaper. The pirate ship interiors are beautiful and clean. The trip from togendai to Moto hakone is more interesting than the reverse, involving a ship-to-ship transfer. One issue: no soap in the women's restroom of the cruise port at Moto hakone. This was the case on two separate days during 2020 year end, a bit strange considering the Corona pandemic situation. Hope this has been sorted...

Part of the Hakone circular sightseeing stops. Reachable by bus from Hakone-Yumoto station, around 30 min trip time. The shrine and Torii gate are less than 10 min walk from the port. There are some restaurants around, restrooms and stands that rent swan boats for paddling on the lake. Tips: The Hakone Freepass worth its price for using the different public transportations, lake Ashi pirate ship ride and access to recommended stops along the way. Start the circular trip counter clockwise, leaving the port as the last stop.
