This place is such a hidden treasure of Kyoto! Being a Christian, I was so honored to have seen this monument of the Christian martyrs of Japan. The faith and courage of the 17th century Christians was so inspiring! Men, women and children were all burned alive here due to the 1614 law banning Christianity. The mothers were tied to their children and Thekla Hashimoto was even pregnant. They were willing to die for Jesus Christ and their charred bodies were guarded for several days so as not to be collected by Christians. In present times, a monk, Catholic priest and Protestant pastor united in prayer here to honor...

The Edo Shogunate's persecution of Christians began in 1612, spread to Kyoto the following year, and continued until the Winter Siege of Osaka (1614). The second persecution began during the Genna era (1615-23), and became even more severe when Hidetada (1579-1632) went to Kyoto in 1619. Hidetada learned of the imprisoned Christians in Fushimi and ordered them to be burned at the stake, regardless of age or gender. 52 people were loaded onto a large cart and met a tragic end at Rokujogawara. After this, Christians never appeared on the historical stage in Kyoto again. This stone marker marks Rokujogawara, the site of the Christian martyrdom.
