In the Middle Ages, the monk Kuya founded the Ichiya Dojo after receiving divine revelation. The monk Ippen traveled around the shrine grounds, dancing and chanting Buddhist prayers. In 1591, the shrine was moved to its current location. It remains the guardian deity of Kyoto Central Market. The water from Amenomana Well on the shrine grounds was used to bathe the firstborns of successive emperors, and is still used today as a famous spring for tea ceremonies. In addition, the Imperial family and nobles are given Goju-ka-mochi on the 50th day after birth, and even today, old families receive mochi from this shrine, which is the birthplace of the first meal of the year. The statue of the mother goddess holding the child god is a rare figure full of compassion, and was made by Emperor Kazan in the Heian period.
