Benkei Stone — Attraction in Kyoto

石碑： 辨慶石はこの石標の横に置かれている石。石標に示す『山州名跡志』巻十七には，弁慶の愛した石で，弁慶の死後奥州にあったが，京都の三条京極へ行きたいと声を発したので，この地に移したと記す。しばらく新京極の誓願寺に預けられていたが，明治26(1893)年にこの地に戻り民家内に置かれ，昭和4年に三条通沿いの現在地に移された。町名弁慶石町はこの石にちなむ。この石標は辨慶石の所在を示すものである。 なお，京都に所在し弁慶石と呼ばれた石についてはさまざまな伝承があり，瀬田勝哉「弁慶石の入洛」(瀬田『洛中洛外の群像』1994年平凡社刊に収める)にまとめられている。

説明版： 辨慶石の由来 この石は辨慶が熱愛したと謂はれ 辨慶は幼少の頃三条京極に住み死後 この石は奥州高館の辺にありましたが 発声鳴動して「三条京極に往かむ」といひ その在所には熱病が蔓延したので 土地の人が恐怖し亨徳三年(約五百年前) 三条京極に移し以来当町を辨慶石町 と称するに到りました その後市内誓願寺方丈の庭に移りましたが 明治二十六年三月町内有志者により当町へ 引取られ　昭和四年七月十二日この場所に 建立されたものであります　　英香書 平成八年四月 京都市中京区三条通辨慶石町 （現地説明版より） Stele: Benkei stone is a stone placed next to this stone marker. 麩屋町（ふやちょう）三条の交差点を東に行った北側のビルの敷地内あるのが「弁慶石」になります。 町名の弁慶石町はこの石にちなむ。弁慶石と刻まれた石碑と説明書きの銘板があります。

弁慶の愛した石で，弁慶の死後奥州にあったが、室町時代に「京都に帰りたい」と声を発して泣き、熱病が蔓延したので「辨慶のたたり」だとうわさが広がった。そこで享徳3年（1454年）に弁慶が幼少期に過ごした三条京極の地にあった「京極律寺」に運ばれた。 天明8年（1788年）に新京極の誓願寺に預けられていたが、明治26年(1893年）にこの地に戻り民家内に置かれ、昭和4年に三条通沿いの現在地に移された。
