The Lotus Fountain at Higashi Honganji (東本願寺) in Kyoto is a captivating feature that enhances the temple’s serene ambiance. Situated near the temple’s entrance, this fountain is designed in the shape of a lotus flower, symbolizing purity and enlightenment in Buddhist tradition. The lotus motif is significant in Buddhism, representing the journey towards spiritual awakening, as the lotus rises unblemished from muddy waters. Higashi Honganji, established in 1602, is one of Kyoto’s prominent temples and serves as the head temple of the Otani-ha branch of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. The temple complex is renowned for its massive wooden structures, including the Goeido Hall, one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. The presence of the Lotus Fountain adds to the temple’s tranquil atmosphere, offering visitors a place for reflection and contemplation. The fountain’s design is both aesthetically pleasing and spiritually meaningful. Water gently cascades from the center of the lotus, creating a soothing sound that complements the temple’s peaceful environment. This feature not only serves as a visual focal point but also embodies the essence of Buddhist teachings, reminding visitors of the beauty that can emerge from adversity. Visitors to Higashi Honganji often find the Lotus Fountain to be a highlight of their experience. It provides a serene spot to pause and appreciate the harmonious blend of art, nature, and spirituality. The fountain’s presence underscores the temple’s dedication to creating a space where individuals can connect with deeper philosophical concepts while enjoying the serene beauty of their surroundings. In summary, the Lotus Fountain at Higashi Honganji is more than just an ornamental feature; it is a symbol of purity, enlightenment, and the enduring human spirit. Its elegant design and tranquil presence enhance the overall experience of the temple, making it a cherished spot for both locals and tourists seeking peace and reflection in the heart of Kyoto.

There are many fountains in public facilities in Kyoto City, but this one has a unique design that is appropriate for a temple fountain.

It was actually designed by Takeda Goichi, an architect who was active in Kansai from the late Meiji period to the early Showa period and who was also a professor at Kyoto University's Department of Architecture, and was known as the "father of modern Kansai architecture." It was also designed by Takeuchi Seiho, a pioneer of modern Japanese painting and a leading figure in the Kyoto art world.

The lotus flower design is very elegant and the fountain has a Japanese feel.

The water here is carried to this fountain through the Honganji Waterworks, a fire prevention waterworks unique to Higashi Honganji Temple that was laid in the Meiji period and carried here through a 4.6 km water pipe buried from the Lake Biwa Canal.

(Reference: kyoutipi) The area between the Gokaido Gate and the fountain is now a plaza, but until recently, Karasuma-dori branched off from it and cars could...
