This temple was established in 1294. It belongs to Nichiren sect of Buddhism. This is a temple located near Nishijin and alongside the Horikawa River in Kyoto. It was moved to its current location in 16th century when the residence of Hideyoshi Toyotomi was built in Kyoto. Read more日蓮の孫弟子日像を開基とする。当初は西洞院五条にあった。天文五年(1536年)、天文法華の乱で焼失し、堺に避難するが、天文11年(1542年)、大宮元誓願寺通に伽藍を再建した。秀吉の聚楽第造営の天正15年(1587年)に現在の地に移転した。枯山水庭園「十六羅漢石庭」は、桂離宮の造園を指図した妙蓮寺の僧・玉淵防日首(ぎょくえんのぼうにっしゅ)による作庭。玉淵防は造園においては小堀遠州に師事していますた。寺宝には、長谷川等伯筆と伝わる四十二面の襖絵や本阿弥光悦が写筆した書等の宝物がある。The foundation is Nichiren's grandson, Nichizo. Initially it was in Gojo Nishinotoin. In the 5th year of Astronomy (1536), it was burnt down due to the turbulence of the astronomical grammar and evacuated to Sakai. It moved to its present location in 1587, when Hideyoshi's Jurakudai was built. The dry landscape garden "Juroku Rakan Stone Garden" is a garden created by Gyokuen no Bonisshu, a monk of Myorenji who directed the landscaping of Katsura Imperial Villa.
