かつては東大寺や興福寺に並ぶ寺領を誇ったお寺です。現存は敷地も小さくなってしまったこともあって、比較的訪れる人は奈良の他の寺と比べると少ないですが、世界遺産に指定されるだけあって見所はたくさんあります。また宗教の場としても色々と活動されてるので、そういった意味でも見る価値があります。 訪問したときはたまたま屋根裏の一般公開をしていて、奈良時代の大工の落書きや、明日香時代、奈良時代、鎌倉時代などの工法や木材など比較観賞でき良かったです。

I visited the temple for the first time and was amazed by its beauty and tradition. It’s great to see the people there taking care of the temple, rebuilding it, and keeping it alive. It’s definitely worth a visit! I will visit it again as soon as possible...

塔跡は世界遺産ではありません。世界遺産は元興寺「極楽坊」です。両者は現在、塔跡は華厳宗（東大寺の末寺）、極楽坊は真言律宗（西大寺の末寺）です。

入口は少し分かりづらい場所にあります。御霊神社の左隣にある細い道です。塔跡には今は礎石が残るのみです。焼損前の姿は、極楽坊の法輪館（収蔵庫）に収められている「五重小塔」によって知ることができます。

奈良時代には、寺院を除いて平屋建ての建物しかなく、東大寺（七重塔）や西大寺、興福寺、元興寺などの五重塔が林立する様子は、さぞ壮観だったと思われます。

2025年11月1日修正（写真も追加） ・2024年以降、不定期の月の、1回か2回の週末数日間のみ開門されることになりました。しかも、前月の下旬になるまで発表がありません。公式Facebookで確認してから行きましょう。親切なボランティアガイドの方が数名おられます。

・入口が変わりました。御霊神社の前の道を左に進み、角を右に曲がってすぐの場所です。

・「五重小塔」と焼損した「五重大塔（塔跡に建っていた塔）」とは、別の姿であることが近年の研究で明らかになりました。

写真は礎石（17個すべて揃っているのは稀です）、心礎（心柱が置かれる礎石）、宝珠（屋根の真ん中に置かれる装飾具）です。本堂前に置かれている宝珠は、重すぎて屋根に負担がかかりすぎるため、現在の宝珠と交換されたそうです（ボラ...
