593年に聖徳太子によって創建されたと伝えられているお寺。四天王寺別院。 四天王寺にある敬田院、施薬院、療病院、悲田院の内の施薬院が今のこのお寺と言われています。施薬院というのは聖徳太子が仏教の慈悲の思想に基づき、その地に薬草を栽培し、怪我や病気で苦しむ人を救うために四天王寺内に作ったとされる施設です。社会福祉の始まりとも言われています。 施薬院には勝鬘夫人の像が祀られており、聖徳太子が勝鬘経を講ぜられていたことから施薬院は勝鬘院とも呼ばれるようになりました。平安時代以降は金堂の本尊として愛染明王が祀られ、勝鬘院は愛染堂と呼ばれるようになりました。 1570年、織田信長と石山本願寺の戦いで全焼。しかし、1597年に豊臣秀吉によって復興され、多宝塔が再建されました。多宝塔は現在、大阪市に残る最古の木造建築物です。 1615年の大坂夏の陣で再び焼失しますが、1618年に徳川秀忠によって金堂が再建されました。1945年の大阪大空襲では大江神社や四天王寺がほぼ全焼しましたが、このお寺は被害を免れました。多宝塔、金堂と古い建物が残されている貴重なお寺です。 6月30日から7月2日に開かれる愛染祭は、天神祭と住吉祭に並ぶ大阪三大祭と言われていますが、騒音やゴミの問題が露呈し、規模を縮小せざるを得なくなりました。今後については地域住民との話し合いで途絶えた行事・催し物・慣習を復活させるかの可否...
