Haneda Airport (Tokyo International Airport) is one of the best airports in the world, offering a smooth, efficient, and comfortable experience for both domestic and international travelers. Having passed through Haneda multiple times, I find it to be an airport that balances operational efficiency with a traveler-friendly environment.
Accessibility & Location – 5/5
One of Haneda’s strongest advantages is its proximity to central Tokyo. The airport is just about 30 minutes away from key locations like Tokyo Station and Shinjuku via train, making it much more convenient than Narita Airport. The Keikyu Line and Tokyo Monorail provide quick and affordable transportation options, while taxis and buses also offer alternatives.
Airport Facilities – 5/5
Haneda Airport is modern, clean, and well-organized, with plenty of amenities to ensure a comfortable stay. The terminals are spacious, and signage is clear in Japanese, English, and other major languages. • Shopping & Dining: A great selection of duty-free stores, local and international brands, and Japanese souvenir shops. Restaurants offer a variety of options, including excellent ramen, sushi, and even Michelin-rated eateries. • Lounge Services: The ANA and JAL lounges are top-tier, providing business travelers with a quiet and relaxing space before their flights. There are also pay-per-use lounges available for general passengers. • Cleanliness: The airport is impeccably maintained, with spotless restrooms and well-kept public areas.
Check-in & Security – 4.5/5
Check-in procedures are generally smooth, especially for domestic flights where automated baggage drop and security screening are fast and efficient. However, during peak hours, international departures may experience longer lines at security and immigration. Still, the overall process is better than at many other international airports.
Immigration & Customs – 4.5/5 • Arrivals: Haneda is well-staffed, and immigration lines tend to move faster than at Narita. Japan’s automated passport control for returning residents speeds up the process. • Departures: Immigration can take longer during peak times, but facial recognition e-gates help streamline the exit process.
Passenger Experience – 5/5 • Smooth transit: Haneda is great for layovers, with well-organized transfer routes between domestic and international terminals. • Friendly staff: Japanese hospitality is evident throughout the airport, with staff members always ready to assist passengers. • Quiet areas & rest spaces: Plenty of seating, nap areas, and even capsule hotels (First Cabin) for longer layovers.
Areas for Improvement • Peak-time congestion: Although generally efficient, early morning and late-night international departures can experience longer wait times at security and immigration.
Overall Rating: 4.8/5

Read moreWhen I arrived at the airport at the start of my Japan trip it wasn’t bad, the lines weren’t that long for arrivals
Departing for haneda was rather a nightmare tho After my Japan trip we travelled to China and when I was on my route back home we had a layover in Japan
By the time we arrived at the airport and found our terminal we thought that we had enough time before the check in
Little did we know, it was all self check in machines, zero counter check in was available I mean I’m fine with that but what made it worse? Was the amount of machines available were only 3-5 and the rest were not working
It was our first time ever using a self check in machine and gotta say it’s rather a nightmare when your on a time crunch and how the information you need to fill is also quite time consuming especially if you’re not a solo traveller
Disappointed at the lack of staff available at the check in to help us out cause it looks like there was many people like us who needed help
Like I said earlier it was our first time using these type of self check in and we didn’t know how to get our luggage tags until we figured it out somehow easily thank god and when we were in line for the self bag drop out the worker couldn’t even help us just told us to get the tags from the machine (Safe to say I did not like that worker)
But with the amount of people waiting in line for the self bag drop off, it was rather annoying that there’s was only two then three workers available there
By the time it was our turn the worker suddenly hands us a information tag we had to fill out (probably if anything happens to your luggage they have your contact info) and what was nice about it was that after that worker handed us that tag she suddenly starts handing it out to the people in line after us and there was so many more self bag drop off machines but Ofc they are not usable unless a staff had to be there to supervise (they should find a solution for this by that I mean either get more workers or start slapping on some instructions on a screen or wall nearby)
It wouldve been super nice if she would’ve done that for us earlier as well cause we had to waste 5 min ish? To fill the tag tho it wasn’t that time consuming, we were quite scared that we wouldn’t make it on time and with how long we waited in line it was nightmare.
I don’t have any problems with machines instead of human workers but can they just make sure that the machines work, have enough so lines won’t form as long as a snake and maybe also include some steps on how to use it? This makes a school chrome book look better and mind you this is an airport
Well I hope that next time I have a departure from haneda airport it won’t be such a nightmare like this first time was for us and this was a lesson definitely...
