Might not seem like much, but this was one of the things I knew to myself I absolutely had to see in Japan. These gates (and subsequently all of Kabukicho) are what the iconic Kamurocho location is based on in the video game series "Yakuza". After seeing this gate in so many cutscenes and passing it so many times in game, walking through it in real life for the first time felt like a dream. It felt like it didn't make sense but did at the same time if that makes sense haha
It's such a great view as an entrance to a vibrant area of Shinjuku Tokyo. Everything feels like it's lit up as far as the eyes can see! Funny enough there are also lots of hidden Yakuza vending machines (that I didn't even know about!) hidden around the area, including one based on Kiryu close to the gates. Just be careful and don't go running around bumping...
Read moreKabukicho is a busy entertainment area. It's mostly adult only. I see many pachinkos (gambling machines). On the streets, girls in anime clothes with signs to promote their stores (?) I don't know what type of stores, can't read Japanese but most likely adult only too.
Not much shopping but many Izakaya (Japanese bar) serves beer and skewers. Just FYI, they all permit smoking inside the restaurants at this area.
The main thing for me is the Godzilla building. Its cool to see it to check of my list. I thought it will be bigger. I wish the head moves.
Nice to walk around and see decorations, to feel the culture. I have a sense it's even more...
