Matsuchiyama Shoden is a hidden gem in Asakusa that offers a peaceful and deeply spiritual experience away from the tourist crowds. It’s not as well-known as Sensoji, which makes it feel all the more special—almost like a secret sanctuary tucked just a short walk from the busy streets.

The temple grounds are small but full of charm and rich symbolism. You’ll immediately notice the many daikon radish carvings and offerings, which represent purification and protection. It might seem quirky at first, but the meaning behind it is beautiful, and the unique visual makes this temple stand out from others in the area.

The atmosphere here is incredibly serene. The moss-covered steps, stone lanterns, and quiet paths invite you to slow down and reflect. There’s a strong sense of history in the air, and it’s easy to feel connected to something much older and more rooted than the modern city that surrounds it.

Even though it’s not large, there’s a lot of detail to take in—from the main hall and small shrines to the ema (prayer plaques) left behind by visitors. It’s a place where people come to pray for family harmony and good relationships, and you can really feel that energy of warmth and hope.

If you’re looking for a quieter, more intimate temple experience in Tokyo—especially after visiting the more crowded spots nearby—Matsuchiyama Shoden is well worth the time. It’s a peaceful retreat full of heart and meaning, and a reminder of the depth and diversity of spiritual...

The legendary origins of Matsuchiyama, the hill by the Sumida River that the 待乳山聖天 Matsuchiyama shouten is built upon, contribute to the popularity of the location in ukiyo-e (woodblock) prints of famous places around Edo/Tokyo. The slope facing the river is named the 👺天狗坂 Tengu Escarpment and has stairs climbing up to the temple precincts. The stairs are now open to climbers with only a prohibition of pets (dogs). I have a fondness for sake loving tengu as well as stairs to holy sites. I am adding some photos of the stairs as well as the two lions guarding the temple entrance. The temple grounds are full of daikon imagery (a symbol of man's ignorance) and auspicious pouches representing treasure and success in business. The temple has an English language web site that describes some of the treasures at the temple and the symbolism of daikon...

A sacred and quiet temple in Asakusa. I went on weekday not very crowded. I was told that you be granted one wish if you wish wholeheartedly, faithfully and sincerely. Only one wish, not two or three. Think carefully what you want to wish for. The temple was known to bless marriages. Look at the last picture that I attached, with ‘two hand’ folding together that symbolized a proper union of marriage, blissful and happiness. The temple also offer a very beautiful garden. Colourful, scenic and breathtaking. A very maintain temple and so much to offer. A place that calm your nerves and senses. Visit the temple again when your wish is fulfilled.
