TL;DR Version:

MEGA Don Quijote in Shibuya is a decent stop for tourists with its variety of groceries, toys, and household items, but it doesn’t quite live up to the “MEGA” in its title. After visiting the vibrant Akihabara location, this branch feels a bit underwhelming. Worth a visit if you’re nearby, but not a must-see compared to Akihabara.

Full Version:

MEGA Don Quijote in Shibuya is a fine example of Japan’s unique convenience megastores, and it’s worth a look if you’re in the area. Don Quijote has long been known for its eclectic mix of products, and this branch covers all the essentials, from groceries to toys, footwear, souvenirs, and more. For a first-time visitor, MEGA Don Quijote offers a fun and quirky shopping experience filled with both practical items and offbeat surprises.

However, for those familiar with Don Quijote's legendary Akihabara location, the Shibuya branch may feel underwhelming. Despite the “MEGA” title, it doesn’t quite deliver on the same scale or energy. The Akihabara store dazzles with variety, atmosphere, and uniqueness that make each floor an adventure, and it’s hard not to feel spoiled after that experience. Shibuya’s branch, by contrast, has a more modest range and lacks some of the same buzz and standout items that make Don Quijote truly special.

That said, MEGA Don Quijote in Shibuya is still a convenient option for picking up essentials or a few Japanese novelties. The store’s layout is manageable, and the sheer variety is sure to satisfy those looking for quick snacks, interesting souvenirs, or basics like cosmetics and footwear. It’s a good spot if you’re already in Shibuya and need some essentials or want a taste of the Don Quijote shopping experience.

Overall, I’d rate MEGA Don Quijote in Shibuya at 3 out of 5 stars. It’s a fun stop, especially for newcomers, but if you’re looking for the full “Donki” experience, Akihabara is the place to go. Shibuya’s store is solid, but it pales in comparison to the grandness and energy of its Akihabara counterpart.

My recent visit to the Shibuya Don Quijote on Aug 2nd was significantly marred by a poor interaction with staff on the third floor. While searching for an item in the crowded store, I approached two Chinese employees for assistance. I initially asked in Chinese, but my question was completely ignored – I received no response at all.

When I tried again and began pulling out my phone to show a photo of the specific item I needed, one employee abruptly pointed towards a general area saying "over there," before I could even show her the picture. This dismissive gesture was clearly not an attempt to genuinely help.

I then asked if they were busy, stating I wouldn't bother them if so. At this point, one employee claimed they were about to finish work. Out of consideration for this stated reason, I left them alone to search by myself.

However, approximately 30 min later, while I was still actively shopping on the same floor,I saw the very same employee who had used the "about to finish work" excuse still here and working, with no indication she was preparing to leave imminently (looks like she was re-organizing the items on shelf)

I simply needed minimal assistance navigating your large store. This experience, marked by rudeness, dismissal, and outright lying to avoid helping a customer, was completely unacceptable. Staff displaying such attitudes and dishonesty are not suitable for customer facing roles. This severely damaged my shopping experience and perception of Shibuya Don Quijote.

This experience was so concerning regarding basic service standards that I actually spoke to a manager before leaving the store. I recounted the events on the third floor and showed them a photo of the employee who gave the false excuse. I made it clear that my feedback stemmed from a place of concern: Don Quijote is a large, well known company, and it's disappointing to see individual staff behavior like being deliberately unhelpful and dishonest with customers, potentially damaging its hard earned reputation and driving shoppers away. I hope this feedback leads to improved training or...

A Must in Shibuya.

MEGA Don Quijote in Shibuya is one of the most famous shopping destinations in Tokyo, and for good reason. Open 24 hours, this massive multi-floor discount store is a chaotic yet fascinating place where locals, tourists, and even late-night partygoers come to shop, explore, or simply wander. The store is enormous, with floor after floor stacked high with merchandise. The atmosphere is loud and vibrant, with bright signs, colorful displays, and the familiar Don Quijote jingle playing in the background. It can feel overwhelming at first, but that’s part of its charm.

The product range is staggering. You’ll find practically everything here: Japanese snacks, sweets, sake, cosmetics, clothing, electronics, quirky souvenirs, toys, anime merchandise, household goods, and even luxury brand items at discounted prices. Travelers often come here for souvenirs like Kit-Kat flavors exclusive to Japan, quirky candies, or beauty products that are popular with international visitors. Many also use it as a convenient one-stop shop for practical items like umbrellas, travel adapters, or cheap suitcases.

Prices are generally lower than in regular shops, and there are frequent promotions. Tourists can take advantage of the tax-free counters, though it can get crowded during peak hours. Because it is open around the clock, it’s especially convenient for those exploring Shibuya late into the night who want to do some shopping after dinner or clubbing. The store is very popular, so weekends and evenings tend to be extremely busy, with narrow aisles that make moving around with large baskets a challenge.

Despite the crowds, many visitors find MEGA Don Quijote to be an essential part of the Tokyo experience. It combines bargain hunting, cultural curiosity, and entertainment under one roof. The variety is unmatched, and even if you don’t plan to buy much, simply browsing through the endless sections feels like an adventure. If you’re in Shibuya, it’s worth visiting at least once to see this iconic store and maybe leave with a few...
