Tokyo's Otaku Paradise: Akihabara and Ikebukuro Sunshine City

The hotel conveniently located with direct access to Sunshine Mall and the vibrant Ikebukuro shopping area, but unfortunately, my experience left much to be desired. While the location is undeniably great for shopping and exploring, the hotel itself is far from ideal for rest and comfort. Firstly, the bedding situation was a letdown. The pillows were extremely flat, prompting us to request three additional pillows just to achieve something resembling proper support. The bed itself was hard, which made it difficult to get a good night's sleep. The air conditioning was another point of frustration. The unit had only three settings: low, mid, and high, with no option for fine-tuning the temperature. This meant that the room felt just air circulate neither jot or cold, especially at night, and there was nothing we could do to alleviate the discomfort. Soundproofing in the hotel was nearly nonexistent. Many large tour groups were staying at the same time, and their boisterousness made for a restless atmosphere. It was common to hear loud conversations and even the sound of phones scrolling late into the night. This lack of peace and quiet detracts significantly from the experience, especially if you are hoping for a relaxing getaway. On a more positive note, there is a Family Mart conveniently located downstairs, which is great for quick snacks and essentials. However, if you’re not particularly interested in character shops like Pokémon, Snoopy, or Sanrio, I would recommend staying a bit further in the Ikebukuro area. You can easily visit Sunshine Mall for shopping and the aquarium without compromising on your comfort. In conclusion, despite the hotel's superb location, the numerous discomforts—hard beds, inadequate air conditioning, poor soundproofing, and uncomfortable bedding—lead me to believe that this hotel does not offer the value one would hope for. I would suggest looking elsewhere for a more restful experience.

This hotel was booked as part of a tour but was far and away the worst the company chose and certainly not one I would ever recommend. The public spaces and direct connection to the adjoining shopping centre are all okay. Nothing special but clean and tidy with attentive staff etc. Some updates would make things nicer perhaps but are in keeping with a 3 star hotel. The room we had was another matter entirely though. Discussions with others on our tour suggested similar issues. The bathroom was dirty, especially around the bath, sink and toilet. Mould and dirt had stained the walls and fixtures. Water from the shower drained down the wall, under the bath and eventually ran over the floor. The shower curtain was stained but evidently nobody thought it necessary to change it for a clean one. There was a layer of dust around the floor showing that nothing was moved when the room is cleaned. Behind the room door was like this, clearly the door was not closed to hoover behind it. Moving any item of furniture (bedside table for example) and there was more dust. Even under the beds it was dusty. All I can conclude is that the hotel's management seem to have very low standards for how they want their rooms to be presented. Maybe more time is required to clean each room properly or more checking of standards by management. Either way, based on my experience, avoid this hotel if you can.

I recently stayed at Hotel Sunshine City Prince, and I cannot recommend it to anyone. Despite its central location, the hotel feels like an outdated dungeon. The carpets are filthy to the point that I wouldn’t walk barefoot in my room. The rooms are incredibly small, giving it more of a factory-like feel than a hotel. Please don’t be fooled by the photos on Booking.com or other travel sites. The pictures are clearly outdated and taken with wide-angle lenses to make the rooms look much larger than they actually are. If I had to rate this hotel, I’d give it three stars or less, even though some websites falsely list it as a four-star hotel. While the view from the panorama floor is nice, the window is disappointingly small—about the size of a 3’ x 4’ canvas. The bathrooms are equally tiny, and it’s hard to feel comfortable in such a cramped space. The biggest letdown was the breakfast. Served in a windowless basement, it was bland and lacked any class or appeal. Breakfast is such an important part of starting your day, especially when you’re on vacation, and this one simply didn’t cut it. Overall, I would rate this hotel 2.5 stars. If you’re considering staying here, I highly suggest finding another place with better amenities, larger rooms, and a decent breakfast to truly enjoy your time in Tokyo.
