Tayasu-mon Gate — Attraction in Tokyo

Entrance to The Nippon Budokan, Tayasumon Gate is one of the Tokyo's most famous landmarks. A must visit during spring cherry blossom season the moat embankments are adorned with remarkable Sakura trees. Access five minutes from Kudanshita Station.

Tayasu-mon Gate was originally built in the 17th century during the Edo period and served as one of the main entrances to the castle. The gate is a typical Masugata-mon style of gate, which was commonly used during the Edo period in Japan. Masugata-mon style gates were designed to have two sets of doors, which provided a more secure entrance to the castle. The Tayasu-mon Gate is an excellent example of this design, and it is one of the few remaining gates that still retains its original shape and style.

The exact date of construction for the Tayasu-mon Gate is unknown, although according to some historical literature, this gate was already in existence in 1607. The present gate was reconstructed in 1636, and it is the oldest remaining gate in the Kokyogaien National Gardens.
