Saw this on our way to somewhere else and decided to pop in and have a look.. Wr are always really interested to discover more about Jewish culture in the countries we visit.

Unfortunately this was a big disappointment. The caretaker was quite rude. We were asked for a 5 Euro "donation" per person. It did feel quite aggressive and a scam to demand money for visiting somewhere that is very rundown and definitely not a proper museum. There is VERY little to see here.

The Choral Synagogue in Kaunas is an amazing and important place to visit. The beauty of the remaining community and that of the building itself, coupled with Lithuanian Jewish history, make it an incredibly powerful place in which to daven.

However, whether you want to daven here or just take photos and learn about the history and community, this is a must see destination that alone is worth a trip...

Nog zo'n bijzonder stukje geschiedenis en oud gebouw. Deze synagoge is een van de twee werkende koorsynagogen in Litouwen. En alles op vrijwilligers. Dat kan je ook wel zien, want er is veel achterstallig onderhoud. Maar alsnog is het bijzonder. De synagoge werd gebouwd in 1872. In 1902, vóór de Holocaust in Litouwen was het een van de meer dan 25 synagogen en nu nog 2 voor een hele kleine gemeenschap Joden. Ik werd persoonlijk uitgenodigd en mocht rondlopen en kreeg een prachtig herdenkings cadeautje mee..... Another special piece of history and old building. This synagogue is one of two working choral synagogues in Lithuania. And everything on volunteers. You can also see that, because there is a lot of deferred maintenance. But it is still special. The synagogue was built in 1872. In 1902, before the Holocaust in Lithuania, it was one of more than 25 synagogues and now 2 for a very small community of Jews. I was personally invited and was allowed to walk around and received a beautiful commemorative gift...
