Vytautas Didysis (Vytautas the Great): Lithuania's national hero. During his reign (1392-1430) as Grand Duke, Vytautas has always strived to guarantee Lithuania's independence. This is one of the reasons why he is the personification of the Lithuanian National Revival in the 19th century. He fights many wars: first against his cousin Joigaila for the title of Grand Duke of Lithuania, later against the Teutonic Knights, the Golden Horde, the Tatars and the Russians.
