I had the worst experience today at the Gurney Paragon shopping mall car park. After finishing my dinner at HDL on level 4 around 11 pm, I needed to return to my car on the LG level to go home. Unfortunately, the lift from level 4 was inaccessible, so my husband, my 3-year-old son, and I had to take the escalator up one level and walk to the lift, which was the same route we took earlier.

To our surprise, the entrance we used to enter the mall was locked, preventing us from walking out to the car park. There were no additional signs or instructions to guide us. We attempted to follow a fire exit path, but it didn't lead us to the car park. There was no sign of any security guards to assist us. It was a challenging situation, especially with my young son with me.

During our struggle, we encountered another couple facing the same issue of not being able to find their way. Fortunately, the gentleman was a local and remembered a route that required us to go up to level 1 and walk to the car park on that level. We decided to follow his directions. After a long walk, we finally exited the mall and reached the car park, but it was on the LGM level. We assumed that following the arrow pointing downwards would lead us to the LG level, as indicated by the signboard. However, when we went down one level, we found ourselves in the basement, and there was a further level called basement 2. There was no sign indicating the LG level. Eventually, we noticed a car park lift, but it wasn't accessible to levels LGM and below. We had to backtrack to level 1 and use the lift to go down to the LG level. The entire experience was exhausting and uncomfortable, especially considering it was already 11:30 pm, and there was nobody around to provide assistance.

In our attempt to find a way out, we came across an exit ticket pole and pressed the intercom button, but no one responded. We noticed a security contact number and decided to call it. A Chinese uncle answered the call and instructed us to wait as he would lead us the way. Thankfully, there was network coverage in the basement, allowing us to make the call. Finally, the security uncle was able to lead us back to our car, using his staff card to access the lift. It's worth mentioning that the uncle seemed a bit strange and appeared to be slightly intoxicated. When we asked him questions, he either ignored us or provided unclear responses that we...

Gurney Paragon Mall – Penang

This is one of the more upscale malls in Penang, and it has a very modern and spacious design with high ceilings and plenty of natural light, which makes walking around quite pleasant.

🛍️ Shopping & Stores The mall leans more toward premium and lifestyle brands, including fashion, beauty, and skincare. If you’re looking for high-end retail, perfumes, or makeup, this is one of the better spots in Penang. There are also a good mix of restaurants, cafés, and dessert places scattered across different levels.

🍴 Food & Dining While it doesn’t have as large a food court as some other malls (like Gurney Plaza next door), the dining options here are carefully curated. You’ll find a nice selection of international cuisines, as well as trendy cafés for coffee and desserts.

🎭 Atmosphere & Events The mall often hosts seasonal decorations and events — for example, the photo shows a festive setup near the central atrium. The wide open space in the middle makes it a good venue for exhibitions, promotions, and cultural shows.

🚗 Accessibility The mall is wheelchair accessible, with wide walkways and elevators. Parking is available but can get busy during weekends, so weekdays are more comfortable if you prefer a quieter experience.

✨ Overall Compared to Gurney Plaza, which is more crowded and caters to a wider range of budgets, Gurney Paragon feels a bit more refined and spacious, making it a good place if you prefer a calmer shopping experience with...

Update: The celebrations, they keep coming. Barely have the Christmas carols been sung and the decorations for Chinese New Year are beginning to adorn the big hall and many shops. And they look good. We had some icecream at Baskin Robbins (pretty good!!). The service at the Vinstella shop was outstanding and the staff member on duty was extremely patient and wore it with a smile. We found the Kapten Batik showroom classy, but a tad expensive. Older review: Nice mall. More upmarket than its neighbour, Gurney Plaza. Has some really good global brands as well as local biggies. The food-court has been refurbished recently and looks neat and clean. TGV Cinemas are also a much better bet than the cinema at the neighbour's. We like the Succulents shop, Bath and Body Works, Decathlon, the new Nitori showroom, and the massive H&M. The Moody Cow cake shop here is wonderful with a lot of character and Napoleon for company. Bonjour Garden in the basement is also a great coffee shop. We visited the Brussels Beer Cafe a few times. Good collection of beers, but service levels need to pick up. Will make it a better watering hole. Jaya Grocer, also in the basement of the sprawling mall is a great value add. It is very well stocked though pricier than Lotus's. Could improve on the bread collection. The Christmas decorations up currently add to the festive feel of the season.
