Review: Taiping Zoo & Night Safari – A Memorable Wildlife Experience in Malaysia
Taiping Zoo & Night Safari, located in the serene town of Taiping, Perak, stands as one of Malaysia’s most well-established zoological parks. Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Taiping Lake Gardens and framed by lush rainforest, the zoo offers an immersive and educational experience for visitors of all ages.
Daytime Zoo Experience
During the day, Taiping Zoo showcases a wide variety of animals in enclosures that attempt to mimic their natural habitats. The collection includes native Malaysian species such as the Malayan tiger, tapirs, and sun bears, alongside international species like giraffes, zebras, and orangutans. The zoo is well-laid-out and walkable, with shaded pathways that make it comfortable even on warmer days. Informational signage is placed throughout the park, enhancing the educational aspect of the visit.
The zoo also places emphasis on conservation and public awareness, making it a suitable destination for families and school groups. There are rest areas, food stalls, and a tram service that makes it accessible for children and the elderly.
Night Safari – A Unique Perspective
The Night Safari is a standout attraction, offering a rare opportunity to observe nocturnal animals in action. It provides a different perspective compared to the daytime visit, as many animals are more active after dark. The lighting is thoughtfully arranged to simulate moonlight, enhancing visibility without disturbing the animals' natural behaviors.
The tram ride during the Night Safari is both comfortable and informative, with a guide or recorded narration explaining the animals and their nighttime activities. For those who enjoy walking, there are also pedestrian paths open during the night tour, providing a more intimate experience.
Overall Impressions
Taiping Zoo & Night Safari is a commendable effort in combining wildlife education, conservation, and recreation. While the zoo may not be as large or modern as some international counterparts, it is well-maintained, affordable, and rich in biodiversity. The natural setting enhances the overall atmosphere, making it one of the more scenic zoos in the region.

Unique Night Safari experience
Family-friendly facilities and tram service
Educational and conservation-focused

Read moreI used to visit the zoo a few times during my childhood, but recently I came by after a long time.
Because I just came by for a short trip. So I took the night safari tour. Last minute trip as it's been while we don't come to Taiping and I just want to make didi" (弟弟) experience new things. So why not, right? It is Sunday night, so there are not many visitors and it is not crowded.
Prices were very reasonable for what's on display.
For the tour, they fill up all passengers (visitor) together in the tram (train) .The The driver explains about the zoo and where the drop-off and pick-up spot is located.
For the first route, I got the friendly driver. Explain everything. He did a good job pointing and informing us the animal in there. It is a very good initiative. But after walking along the zoo, I Take back to return to the exit, the other driver just keep silent, too bad for the passengers with him. However, he was kind enough to let me and my friends go another round. Even though we have already finished the route.
It become so nice as I had a very good walk during the walking time, despite it being very dark there. It would be great if I could bring some torchlight. But I'm not convinced it's a wise decision. As some irresponsible visitor might disturb the animals using the torchlight. Huhu. So it's not practical.
Taiping Zoo has been a pleasant experience so far, but I hope to see some maintenance improvements to enhance the overall experience. Hopefully, the zoo will also increase its variety of animals, similar to most other zoos.
P/s :If you ask me, I don't recommend coming at night as it's hard to see animals. The lights at the zoo are low, and most of the animals are sleeping and hidden. But to experience it for yourself, you can try it.
Oh yeah, for a better experience in the future, let's all support the adoption program. Who knows, maybe the zoo will upgrade its...
Read moreThis isn’t the first time at this zoo, however this time’s experience was just upsetting.
The reptiles (new) area has been in upgrade/maintenance since I last visited last year.
The zoo was relatively clean but I think can still be improved, especially the toilets.
As we were walking around the zoo, it stated to rain - HEAVILY - and even though we tried to make our way back to the center of the zoo or even the entrance via whatever little shade there was - it was impossible and we were stuck. The gazebos were majority in maintenance with nails sticking out of it and what’s worse, the buggy that takes you around the zoo just blatantly ignored us (cold and drenched).
The zoo admin should improve on mitigation plans whenever it rains, especially as heavily as it usually is in Dec - such as taking out empty buggy carts to pick up stranded visitors around the zoo and fix the gazebos so that there’s more area to shade in.
More seating areas throughout the zoo would also be great - as the zoo is relatively big!
Cleanliness of the zoo altogether and also facilities around the zoo like the cafe can greatly be improved in my opinion.
Additionally, I think the zoo can start in new initiatives like feeding the animals or a small petting zoo etc to promote the zoo better.
The tour via the buggy can also be improved - don’t rush through the animals & explanations. Talk more about the animals and don’t show how much you hate the job as visitors come to learn more about the animals there - locals & tourists alike.
Overall, I love the zoo but my experience this time was very disappointing.
I really hope the zoo can be upgraded a bit more and maintained well - especially in treating their...
