This is the must see place in Malta in my point of view. The inner decorations are definitely worth a visit. You can check the heraldry of the knights of the Malta. Each chaple has its own stories and the audio guide will give you a detailed description about the stories. The most important thing for this place is the paintings from Caravaggio. It is awe-inspiring to see the masterpieces of Caravaggio here. The audio guide gives you a detailed explanation of the background of the paintings as well as a brief introduction of the life of this controversial painter from the renaissance. Even though I visited this place off the peak season, there were still so many tourists and I was lining up in front of the entrance for half an hour. After you go in, before you may check out Caravaggio's paintings, you have to line up again and wait. If you really want to get the most out of this visit, it can easily take couple hours just in this cathedral. It is not allowed to eat inside this cathedral but right in front of the entrance there are trash cans. In general the experience was very nice and this is definitely the top 1 place of Malta.

It looks like a fort on the outside, but inside is a stunning, beautiful Cathedral in the heart of Valetta. The whole Cathedral - floors, walls, cathedral is steeped in detail, created by artists and craftsmen from Rome so wherever we looked there was something to marvel at. I personally did not think the price of entry was too high - especially considering the cost of the Cathedral's upkeep. My wife and I were inside for the best part of two hours and probably would have stayed longer had it not been so crowded. I would not recommend visiting during summer months but it certainly is a Cathedral not to be missed. Also on the positive side is that it is accessible for wheelchairs with ramps at the entrance and exit. Inside there is a small lift, for wheelchairs, to go down to view the Carvaggio paintings.

I visit a lot of churches because of my interest in history. The austere outside of this cathedral gives no indication of the level of decoration inside. Detailed audio guide, which you can read as well as listen to. And then there are the Caravaggios, with additional information about his life, which he was such an important painter, and analyses of the 2 main paintings, The execution of St John and one of St Jerome ( kept at a lower level following its previous theft). Don’t miss the Caravaggio cross on the right on the entrance to the Oratory. The other paintings in the separate chapels are also impressive, as is the ceiling.

From the outside it doesn't look like a spectacular building but inside this is a beautiful richly filled Cathedral in the heart of Valetta. The statues, the wall and ceiling paintings, the marble...everything about it is just breathtaking. People are working non-stop to renovate everything with the utmost precision. You can follow this live for a while which is definitely recommended for those interested. The ticket price also includes a clear audio guide and access to the balcony. The audio guide itself I found rather tedious but that is purely personal and also has to do with my own interests. This cathedral is truly a gem.

Must visit cathedral if you are in Valetta, we chose to go around 4 pm, right before closing time because there wasn`t such a long queue. We did not buy tickets in advance, it was 30 E for 2 adults, kids for free and they got a coloring/activity brochure. Audio guide was included, unfortunatly not in hungarian and it wasn`t the best quality, one drained, the other one crackeled so the service provided for the money wasn`t really worth it and it felt a little overrated. Caravaggio`s painting ( The Beheading of St John the Baptist ) compensate for the minuses but could be closer to the visitors.
