The parish originated in Byzantine times from the time of Emperor Theodosius I in the 4th century. The original church was the main Roman pagan temple of Gozo which had been converted by a Greek missionary into a Christian church dedicated to Saint George. The Roman temple stood at the site of the present church. The church is also documented in manuscript sources in c. 1250, when it is recorded functioning as a parish church. The foundation stone of the present church was laid on 7 August 1672. The church's construction was completed by in 1678 and it was consecrated on 21 September 1755 by Bishop Paul Alphéran de Bussan. At the time it was the largest Christian church on the island and was the first church in Gozo to be built in the form of a Latin cross. In the 1930s the church was enlarged with the addition of the naves and the side chapels. Between 1939 and 1940 the dome of the church was reconstructed due to damage done in the earthquakes of 1693 and 1789. The roof was also rebuilt and reconstructed in the Roman style arch between 1938 and 1939. The basilica has a total of 11 side chapels. The door, named Porta Salutis, is made entirely of bronze and was manufactured in Verona on a design by John Grima

I was wandering around the boutiques in Gozo (one stop on a day tour) and happened upon this church. I am a big fan of architecture so I popped in. What an awesome surprise! Definitely one of the finest interiors I have ever seen in a place of worship. The sense of calm and peace is palpable here as well. The level of detail is jaw dropping and I took some amazing photos (it would be hard not to). There was no service going on - just a few visitors during the 15 minutes or so that I was there. I dropped some euros into the available receptacle; there was a woman selling rosaries and other religious items near the door. In Valletta I visited the St John's Co-Cathedral (the "crown jewel" of Malta) but I have to say I found this little gem, St. George's Basilica, equally as lovely. Highly recommend a stop into this ornate church while on Gozo!

The entire southern side of the Piazza San Gorg is occupied by St. George's Basilica. Today's Baroque church was built between 1672 and 1678 to a design by the late architect Vittorio Cassar, and although completed, it was not consecrated until 1755. In true Baroque style, the interior of the church is lavishly decorated; one of the church's most important art-historical treasures is the altarpiece of St. George by Mattia Preti. In 1958, the church building was elevated to the status of a minor basilica.

Beautiful square, didn't go inside as I was not wearing long pants (singlets, shorts and flip flops prohibited). Had a mediocre breakfast and coffee in the square.. can't remember the name of the place, but if you're standing in the steps looking away from the basilica, don't eat at the place immediately on the left, in front of you.

Another spectacular monument in Victoria. While it doesn't look very attractive from outside, inside it is a hidden gem with very rich decorations. Entrance is free however I'm not sure if there are any openings hours which need to followed but it looks like it is open during the day. This basilica is definitely worth a visit.

Stunning building. Be mindful of what clothing you are wearing as you will not be allowed in with vest tops shorts or low cut clothing, this applies to all genders. Photography is allowed so long as there is no flash. Sections are cordoned off for those coming solely for prayer to do so in peace
