Kotor walls is a complicated maze, not much reviewed , not many signages and definitely not well maintained. most of the the fortress and cathedrals on the walls are in disrepair. it's more clear when i actually do the hike up. Kotor old city wall is the walls around the old town. Kotor wall is this huge fortress structure that surrounds the whole hill on top of the old town. the top of this wall and of course the hill, is st john's fort. Ladder of kotor is the zig zag pathway at the left hand side of this hill. it is outside this massive wall structure. Kotor wall is massive and hard to climb, very hard on the knees as the stone pathways are uneven and i kept on slipping on the stones. try to use the stone steps on the side of the pathway whenever there's one. ur poor knees will thank u for it. most people just stop halfway at the abandoned cathedral as that is only halfway. St john's fort has a flag on it and u can see the spectacular hill behind it ( where the black birds of kotor flock). also, now there's no free entrance anymore. the entrance behind Typhon cathedral is manned all the time. also u may have to show the staff ur ticket on the way out of the wall. anyway the view of the bay is almost the same after the halfway point. the only satisfaction is ' i did the whole wall of kotor'. beware the gust of wind on top. i had to squat down to avoid being blown...

Sure, it’s a good walk up with over 200m of climbing but great views take some work and this one is absolutely worth it (and the 8€ ticket in busy season, free off season despite what the other review says).

You can go part way to the first church for a nice view or all the way to the top of the wall (and well beyond there) for higher and higher ones. Stunning sight down to the city, the water, the mountains and the old walls all around. Figure about 45 minutes up at a reasonable pace, 30 minutes moving well.

Con: Only real draw back is seeing the trash piles at the top. Pack out what you carry in!

Watch our: The stones can also be slick with how much they’ve been worn in so best to take the steps down and bring some water up (or a few coins to buy it from the vendors who sell...

One of the highlights of any stop in Kotor, Montenegro, is The Sveti Ivan (St. John) Fortress.

Standing 280m (918 ft) above Kotor Harbour, those fit enough to brave the 1350 steps over a 2-2.5 hour hike will enjoy picture-perfect views of the Old City, the harbour, and the entire Bay of Boka Kotorska.

There's a fee of €8 between 07:00 to 20:00; however I've since discovered that you can gain access for free if outside of these hours providing you've completed your hike before 07:00, as you may still be charged if you don't have your ticket for the exit barriers.

We started our hike midday (which I would not recommend), but I suggest starting your hike just before sunset to watch the town light up below you as day turns to night, or early in the morning to avoid...

The views from the top were absolutely stunning. The climb on the other hand is not for the faint of heart. It includes steep stairs, slippery stones, no railing and deep abysses. Truly an adventure but a bit risky too. Also a bit pricy with a fee of 15€ (July 2025), but I didn't regret it considering the view (Maybe the fee could be used for better upkeeping?!). Would do it again.

Apparently the fee has gone up to 15€ per person which, although I was very happy to pay 8€ (which apparently it was 3 weeks ago), I feel that 15€ is a bit steep. The view is magnificent on a sunny day, so there’s that.
