Our local guide Hassan took us on a 3-4 hour tour of the Medina. We would definitely have gotten lost without him. Our tour company hired him, so he was legit. This was all on a Wednesday in March 2022. We started at a small bakery that supplies the main Medina. Our tour company told him we liked snacks, so we got fresh baked cookies, almond pastries, and cheese crackers. They were already doing pre-Ramadan baking. Next, we visited Nejjarine fountain, the most decorated fountain in Fes (which is saying something) and saw the outer door of the caravanasri. We didn't feel like paying to tour it. Then we did pay to tour the Al Attarine Madrasa before lunch nearby (separate reviews). After lunch, we kept walking through the medina shops, selling everything from shoes, fabric, lamps, knives, ceramics, books, all parts of meat, sunglasses (which I bought for 20DH including a case), and more. We eventually visited a fabric store with a giant horizontal loom that only men use. We learned they only use plant-based silk from agave. Two of us got basic fez hats here and another a kaftan and scarf. Finally, we hit the famous Fes tanneries. I would definitely come back to Fes just to spend another day or two wandering and shopping in the Medina. And I would buy an entire vat of the sweet pumpkin mash.

This 1200 year old medina is the world's largest living Islamic medieval city and also the largest pedestrian zone. It's actually fun to get lost here, just taking random turns into streets and ally ways. It feels quite safe to wander around, even into the no commercial areas where many locals live. It is a cool place in both meanings of the word; the high walls and narrow streets largely protect you from direct exposure to the sun. I've tried to give a broad cross section of the Medina in my photos, including both the bustling shopping areas as well as those quite small alleyways that thread their way throughout the area. Many small alleyways are not marked on Google maps, but don't worry if you're navigating using your smartphone; you can still see where you are within the medina and which direction you are heading; so you're never really lost.

The Medina with over 10,000 alleys. If you want a genuine North African Moroccan experience then visit here and stay in the medina if possible. Lots of shops where you can bargain. Some merchants can be rude but that’s the like anywhere else. The residential areas are very quiet at night. Prices in Fes in my view are cheaper than other places. You can navigate your through here with Google maps. Most riads have roof terraces so if you do stay here check it out as some of views are pretty cool. You may even find special birds. My advice would be not to listen to people shouting or approaching you in which direction you should go. Say no when you need to. The Medina is a wonderful place to visit. It was not built for tourists but is accessible to tourists!

It’s a must do in fes but I I think you should not buy anything until you gage what the true prices are. We did a tour with a guide which is recommendable in regards to knowing the history. He discouraged us from buying from sellers he didn’t recommend since they haggle you and follow you if you don’t buy. He also said that you couldn’t trust it was just stuff made from china which is fair. He took us to good quality places but the prices were really high. I feel like the sellers were like well if they can afford the tour they can afford blank- very little negotiation, about 10%… If you’re looking to buy do what feels comfortable to you! Don’t let yourself be pressured. You def need to have walk with a RBF and stand your ground, don’t looks scared.

As some others have mentioned, this location pin does not mark the Medina accurately. The Medina runs along the two main streets: rue taala kebira and rue taala sghira. The easiest way to explore the Medina is to start from bab boujloud (blue gate) and walk along those two streets. The Medina is bustling with people but it does not feel unsafe and touting is not rampant and aggressive (contrary to what I feared after reading many reviews). However, if you are visiting the Medina early in the morning (8-9am), then keep a look out as we noticed someone following us. Otherwise the Medina is peaceful in morning with a few coffee places open.

To fully enjoy this location, get a guide 👍👍 You can easily get lost in this giant maze. Fes and it's sprawling Medina is the largest functioning medieval Medina in the world 🇲🇦 You can also see the largest leather tannery in Northern Africa here. You'll smell the tannery before you see it and they actually supply you with mint to sniff so you can handle the smell. I've never seen so much leather in my life! It's a fascinating place to visit with it's chaotic alleys that you're guaranteed to get lost in without a guide. There's so many merchants selling everything you can think of. From leather handbags 🛍️ to cuts of camel meat 🐪
