As a local Aucklander exploring Rotorua, Kuirau Park was a mind-blowing experience and one I wasn’t expecting to enjoy as much as I did. It’s a public park—but not your usual kind! This place is packed with geothermal wonders, and the best part? It’s free. The first thing that hits you is the steam rising from the ground, creating an almost otherworldly vibe. You’re walking along these paths with bubbling mud pools on either side—it’s unreal. It’s not every day you see the earth literally boiling away in front of you! What I loved most is how accessible it is. You don’t need to hike for hours or pay an entry fee to experience Rotorua’s geothermal magic. It’s right there in the heart of town, perfect for a laid-back stroll or even a quick visit. The foot pools are a bonus. Imagine dipping your feet in naturally warm water while surrounded by this steamy landscape—so relaxing after a day of sightseeing. It’s also family-friendly, with a great playground and plenty of space for kids to run around. The park has a peaceful vibe, but it’s also alive with the sounds of bubbling pools and the occasional hiss of steam vents. It’s fascinating and calming at the same time. I spent a good couple of hours wandering, taking photos, and just soaking in the uniqueness of it all. Honestly, it’s one of those places that reminds you how amazing New Zealand is. If you’re in Rotorua, Kuirau Park is a must-visit—whether you’re a local or a tourist, it’s an experience you won’t forget. Ngā mihi, Kuirau Park, for the incredible memories!

Very nice city park, quite unique in the world for a city to have its own park offering many active geothermal features including a bit of public soaking in hot water. No geysers but some big pools and lots of smells and bubbling. Plus pretty gardens, playgrounds, decent restrooms, library book sales twice a month etc. We are from USA and we chose this place as we didn’t feel the need to pay to see another geyser and liked the idea of free access and some variety, glad we found this place. Apparently it is the best or only? place in this part of the world (having paid in USA, Iceland, St Lucia, etc…. I wonder maybe the whole world?) where one can see geothermal features for free. Parking is free. Please keep up the good work Rotorua, I salute thee! Love this place.

Want a geothermal experience for free? Look no further. This is a must do, while in Rotorua. Lots of geothermal mud and steam to be experienced here. All within a short distance of the CBD too. Excellent parking. Excellent walking opportunities amongst the trees and well maintained gardens. Playground for the kids. Benches dot the park along with epic photo opportunities. Lots of areas to run, play as well as relax also. A place to visit any time of the year. Saturday morning sees the area adjacent the playground turn into a vibrant market offering up yummy food stalls along with lots of art and craft. The warm footbaths are a must too while there!

This is free, fantastic and I can't recommend more! If you wanted to go to a geothermal park but the prices are staggering go here instead! Plenty of parking; I recommend coming a little later in the day when it's cooler, I came back few times over a day or two to really see it all and it's different each time depending on the weather which can change the amount of steam! There is also more to see across the road WITHIN the park, you'll see what I mean if you drive IN to the park rather than park in the little gravel parking stops. Definitely look over every low-boundary-fence-thing too because there is something to see in almost every one!
