Cocoa Cloud Cake — Attraction in Kaipātiki

Cocoa Cloud Cake operates on the premises of a since-closed bakery known as Young's Bakery. Growing up in Birkenhead, Young’s roll cakes were a staple after-school treat, and it was heartbreaking when the bakery closed after so many years. Sadly, in the 25 years I’ve known Birkenhead, few shops have managed to endure.

I never thought to visit the store that replaced Young’s, and to be honest, I rarely find myself walking through the neighborhood anymore. That’s why I was surprised to discover this 5.0-rated cake shop on Google Maps while searching for a friend’s birthday cake.

The Cloud Cake itself is one of the best chocolate cakes I’ve ever had. I’ve long since lost my sweet tooth, so I surprised myself asking for a second slice. It’s rich yet perfectly balanced, and I know now it will be my go-to choice for birthday cakes. My only regret is not finding it sooner.

Birkenhead has changed so much over the years - the decline of video rental stores, closures brought on by the GFC and COVID, and countless Highbury revamps. For a long time, I looked at those changes with resistance, clinging to nostalgia. Discovering Cocoa Cloud Cake has opened my eyes to the good that change can bring, and I’m excited to rediscover Birkenhead through its newer stores.

That being said, their door chime is extremely annoying. One tiny movement at the counter, and a chorus of robotic birds goes off like an alarm - please get...

Thank you so much for the amazing cake. I'm an absolute chocolate and cake fan and your chocolate cake is truly out of this world and exceeded our expectations. It was a real chocolate cake. I've had many chocolate cakes that are just too sweet and completely does not give Cocoa the honor and room to shine. You gave me a real chocolate cake. The 97 dark and signature chocolate cake was amazing. We can't decipher which flavour was best. They were all so good for what they intended to be. Thank you so much for the complimentary white chocolate slice. It was so much better than a Raffello. It was so creamy and delicious. I have not had such a perfect balance of cream, white chocolate and coconut. We normally don't order white chocolate because it's normally too sugary, but I could definitely enjoy the white Cocoa in your white chocolate cake. The peanut cake put a snicker bar to shame as well. Your cakes are so refined and delicate in texture, sweetness and taste. There is nothing in the whole of Sydney with a chocolate cake like yours that uses less sugar and real quality chocolate.

We ordered 5times last year while at Hamilton for each of our occasions and now after moving to Auckland we ordered and travelled from Takanini to collect the cake. Much more worth to travel for this delicious cake 🎂.Staff was so friendly and helpful to select the correct sugar level cake … I highly recommend them … they don’t use cream and cream to make the cake look bigger like e most of the cake places does … they always make sure that you choose correct sugar level cake as per your standards… no artificial colour icing at all. All natural & Good Quality Ingredients.
