Took our tamariki to the foam blocks and chalk room at the art museum. We were regular visitors every weekend. Our whanau always had a lovely time until our most recent visit where we were racially profiled. We were stopped on our way in, our tamariki told to calm down (they werent being loud or disruptive, just being kids) once in the blocks we were told off multiple times by the two older women staff. There were other children in the room being loud, reckless etc but no other whanau were talked to..just our tamariki māori.. we were constantly harassed during this visit.. my husband whom is an artist would quite often leave beautiful artworks on the chalk walls at staff requests.. it was once one of our favorite places to visit as a whanau. The staff struck me as knowledgeable and friendly without being overbearing or smug (sometimes a characteristic of gallery and museum staff) and the small-medium scale of the museum adds to the pleasure of a single visit.
