A big, interesting square with many things. It was fundamentally reshaped by the skopje 2014 project. On the north is the stone bridge, an old and historic bridge. In the middle of the square is a 14.5 meter tall fountain consisting of a large collum, sarrounded by a fountain.Around the fountain are 8 lions, 4 of whom spill water. On top is a large statue of a warrior on a horse. There was also a big fountain in front, however, after reports that a truck fell in and with rising costs, it was closed and remains closed. Speaking of closed fountains, left and right of the stone bridge there are two fountains in the river, which took water out of the river and catapulted it to 20 meters in height. Due to the pollution of the river they ceased operation, never to function again. Due to the skopje 2014 project, there are many statues. There are statues of: two kings, two revolutionaries, a writer, a general, politicians and more. The square is also a intersection of many streets: 11th october street on the southeast, mother teresa was born here, there is a triumphal arch, the woman warrior park, parlament, a large abandoned building tat was on fire, the city hospital and GTZ, a shopping centre are also here. Macedonia street on the south, the main shopping street intersects with dimitrie chupovski boulevard, where all the busses drive, the mother teresa memorial house, a new church and many statues are also here. The street ends at the old, now partially destroyed railway station. This building often reminds locals of the tragic 1963 skopje earthquake, which killed over 1700 people and destroyed around 80% of the city. The clock on the railway station stands still at 5:17 the time the earthquake occured. This review was written on the 25 of july 2023, so one day before the 60th anniversary of the earthquake. Then, on the west lie the nikola vapcarov and maxim gorky streets. On the north is the quay along the river, heavily forested. There are many buildings that sarround the square, all have interesting stories. On the west are two unfinished buildings that tarnish the squares look due to the fact that they are unfinished. One is a hotel, the other is the dome of the officer. This building is a reconstruction of the original, which was destroyed in 1963. Between them is a pavilion with the statue of a couple. Last time I was there, the statue wasnt there. Outside is another statue of a couple and a statue of a man turning into a tree. (why?) On the southwest ist a marriot hotel whose ground floor is a casino. It is a new building, part of the 2014 project. Between the two hotels ist an unfinished arch looking structure. This was planned to the the location of a 30 METER tall monument to mother teresa. On the south is an older building, the ristichev palace. Next to that is a building called pelister. Then, the infamous EVN tower, the tallest building in the square. Around ten years ago, right after the facade waas changed, it caught on fire. The fire left the building permanently abandoned and with a giant black mark. Next to it is a building with a giant screen. Then next to the river is a new office building. A long time ago there was...

Read moreSkopje's town square is an interesting spot, but it may not be for everyone. The square is large and filled with a wide array of statues, including the massive Warrior on a Horse—believed to symbolize Alexander the Great. While it’s visually impressive, some visitors might feel it’s a bit over-the-top, with an almost theme-park vibe due to the sheer number of monuments and statues in one place.
The architecture around the square is a mix of styles, blending neoclassical facades with modern buildings, which some may find charming, but others might feel it lacks authenticity. Despite these points, the square does have a vibrant atmosphere, and it’s nice to walk along the nearby Vardar River or relax at one of the surrounding cafes. It’s particularly lively in the evening when the lights make everything look more enchanting.
Overall, it’s worth a visit for the experience, but it may leave some visitors feeling like it tries too...
