Mother Teresa was born in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, in 1912 during the waning years of Ottoman rule. Though Sunni Islam was then the official religion, Christianity was tolerated and in the part of Albania where Teresa´s parents originated, Roman Catholicism was widely practiced. At 18, Teresa joined the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland then moved to India the following year. In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, the sisters of which wear the Hindu-inspired white sari with blue borders.
