We were so impressed by our first visit that we decided to come back on our final night. Unfortunately, the second time around, the service was… to be improved. Good to know: 1. Both times we went, there were plenty of tables available. Maybe we were lucky but I’m pretty sure you don’t need a reservation! 2. Bring cash! 3. Double-check your bill 💸 From a food perspective, it doesn’t get any better: each plates we tried were perfectly seasoned and cooked as it should. You can tell that they have talented chefs that care about serving premium food in the kitchen! On our first visit, the owner personally took care of our table and we received perfect service and great recommendations. The second time around, we felt like the service was… very unprofessional and cold. The waiter argued with us as he thought we were taking too many plates and said that he would hate for us to waste food… After a day of hiking and fasting, we politely explained our point of view and that we’d be fine but… he pushed back. In the end, we got our plates but with an “extra side” of attitude and laughers from his colleagues that also didn’t seem to agree. One last thing… On our first day, we paid by credit card despite a sign saying that their machine was broken - the owner said that it was an old sign. On our second visit, we had to argue with the waiter that we knew the machine was not broken and just a business decision and he still insisted they couldn’t accept it. We had to go to an ATM, pay a fee and come back to pay our bill. Not professional at all and it lead to a very poor customer experience. Overall, I have mixed feelings about recommending this place. If you have the chance to be served by the owner, then it’s a no-brainer: you should absolutely eat there, this is a 5 stars restaurant. On the other hand, if you’re served by unprofessional staff, you might enjoy the food but… not so much the experience, hence the average rating. PS: Always double-check your bill. They forgot to bring us a plate and we were charged for it. We only realized back at our apartment!

Second time around here cos the first trip was memorable though there are hits and misses. First time around we ordered tuna steak, grilled limpit and octopus with a side dish of sweet potatoes couve. Limpits were excellent though some were gritty. But the garlic butter lime combi was to die for. The grilled octopus was excellent. Perfect to the bite. Tuna steak was ok. Service was attentive, friendly (with some good sense of humor) and the house wine was excellent. Second time around we ordered clams, sirloin and scabbard tempura. Scabbard is a MUST order. The tempura is light, crispy and not greasy. Fish was moist and fresh. The sirloin was cooked spot on. Medium. Juicy. Perfectly salted. Also a MUST to order. The clams was cooked in white wine. Gosh, I was slurping the sauce in the end. Glad I had their garlic bread to soak the sauce with. It is certainly a highly recommended place to check out in Maidera. Nice ambience We have tried 10 other places and we thought , this was worth visiting twice.

It saddens me that this is the only bad experience after a month in Portugal and it had to come on the last day in this seemingly posh establishment. We came to the place mainly because of the passion fruit cheesecake that we saw in the reviews. We decided to have a full meal, but after we had soup (for which we waited for 40min) we found that they don't have it, so we've decided to leave the mains and desert for somewhere where they serve this type of cheesecake. The very smug and patronizing waiter brought us the check. It's cash only (if I had to guess, for tax evasion reasons), so we gave them 50 euros and 50 cent (some pennies) so we can get 33 change. In the picture what we got as a result. When we left the staff was laughingly enjoying their "prank" for only eating soup and giving them a few pennies to round the change. There are very good "people places" in the vicinity, don't ruin your time for mediocre food and Dunning-Kruger syndrome infected, good for-nothing stuff.

Found this place checking TripAdvisor, almost all reviews are great, so I decided to check bads ones saying staff always say it will be too much. They said to us as well this. We decided to take more and it is possible. It was not too long to wait. They even gave us one more dish, fish cake, it was a mistake from them they apologize but I took it and fortunately because it was the best. We order then french fries with beef, Bolo do caco, shrimp, kind of sweet mashed potato maybe one more. As you can see we finished all and my GF is Japanese small girl. Bolo do Caco was ok but I found really better somewhere else. I don’t know how they cook the beef, it is not fried on surface and it is not pink inside... but french fries with beef juice is good. They remove skin of shrimp but keep head and tail, I do it every time it is not easy but it is better to not have dirty fingers. The place is beautiful and trendy, staff is really nice and boss seems to be a good and funny man. Price was really good and even bottle of wine are really accessible. It was really nice but we prefer real traditional bar restaurant that does not appear on apple or google map and much cheaper, good luck to find them.

Great food and great service. Very friendly owner and waitresses who don't hound you to come in. They where helpful and chatty discussing the dishes so we knew what we where choosing. They spoke English, French, Portuguese and maybe more. Don't worry if it looks full from outside, they have an upstairs. He recommended selecting from the share plates doing 4 plates and two sides for 5 people. I can highly recommend this, the fish was fresh and flavourful and well cooked. Some bigger eaters might want an extra side but this was ideal for us. The price was very reasonable for such high quality. We only had fish so we can only vouch for that. I like how the wine he recommended was not an expensive and it went well with the fish. I can highly recommend the tuna and octopus. Keep an eye out, they do have funny opening times but it is on their google maps listing.

Such a little gem close to old Town in Funchal, where most of the restaurants cater for the tourists. Come here though, and you'll generally found that this place is more for the locals. It's a casual, fairly small spot tucked away from the main street, and the menu is comprehensive and down to earth. Generally speaking, I would suggest anything from the fish/seafood section is worth trying - the tuna belly and the tempura scabbard have been standouts for us. The food is fresh and flavours are simple - it's just good, down to earth food. The pigs ears in vinegar are another shout. Our most recent lunch for three (five dishes and three glasses of wine, and water and garlic bread) came to around €75 euro.
