Something you must do when visiting the Sanctuary

We were blessed to be able to be in the Sanctuary on the 100 year anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun. It was an awesome privilege and honor to be able to celebrate this occasion, where it took place so many years ago. The evening before the anniversary day, we attended the saying of a Rosary, a Candlelight Procession and a Mass in the Sanctuary. What a beautiful event! So many people from all over the world, praying together simultaneously. What a powerful feeling of elation to be a part of something of this magnitude. On the day of the anniversary, my wife and I arrived in the Sanctuary early. It was a beautiful morning with a clear blue sky as the sun came up. It wasn’t long before fog began to shroud the area. The Sanctuary was filling with people and fog. The Mass began with a fog filled Sanctuary. Many times you should see the Sun appear through the fog. Finally, as the statue of Mary was being processed from the altar area, through the crowd to its apparition location within the Chapel of Apparitions, the fog cleared and the beautiful blue sky revealed itself, once again. I couldn’t help but think that Mary had performed another miracle on this 100th anniversary day. The Sanctuary is a beautiful area containing the Chapel of Apparitions, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima and the Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity. These sites are all so beautiful and worthy of a visit, to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of our holy Mother Mary. I was very happy to visit the Sanctuary and I’d recommend visiting this and the surrounding area to anyone. I believe you will be very glad that you did.

When I booked our trip to Porto I said a non-negotiable for me was to visit Fatima. I am a Roman Catholic and it meant a lot to me to visit here. This is a very beautiful, special place built because or Blessed Mother asked the children to build a chapel in the place where she visited them. There are three places for masses and worship; the small chapel which is outdoors (but covered from the elements) the big round modern church and the main cathedral which is the one that is most recognized. We stayed on the campus with three meals included (for two days only) for 100 Euros. The bus-a two hour ride- from Porto was only 32 euros for both of us. They have holy mass and rosaries in many languages, and monitor where people are from so they can celebrate mass in the language of those visiting. There are bookstores, a museum, and gift shops on the Fatima campus as well as in the area just surrounding the perimeter. You can purchase and light candles for special intentions and also participate in the night candle vigil. A beautiful, holy, place which tells the story of the three Shepard children and their visits with the Holy Mother.

I recently visited the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima as part of a small pilgrimage. Fatima Square and the Sanctuary is absolutely incredibly! So many people coming to pray, participate in service and see the tombs where Saints Jacinta and Francisco's are kept. Here, people can also see the locations as to where Our Lady of Fatima appeared to the children, and learn about the rich history of this pilgrimage site. The Sanctuary Square itself is huge! The basilica is absolutely magnificent, with extraordinary architecture and artworks. There are also chapels around the square where church services are held, there is the chance to participate in religious worship, do confessions, or simply admire the beauty of the place. In the background, choir music is played, creating a peaceful atmosphere where pilgrims coming to do prayers can immerse themselves more deeply in prayer and rejuvenate their spiritual lives. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima is such an incredible, awe-inspiring place where Mary, the Mother of God, appeared. It is beyond words to describe the captivating beauty and magnificence of this place.
