The statue is a symbolic monument commemorating the origins and early independence of Portugal. Created in bronze by Salvador Barata Feyo in 1968, it depicts Vímara Peres on horseback, holding a spear and shield. Vímara Peres was appointed the first Count of Portucale after he reconquered Porto from Islamic rule in 868. Originally installed at Calçada de Vandoma, the statue now stands prominently in front of the Sé do Porto (Porto Cathedral).

Statue of Vímara who was a vassal of the King of Asturias, Alfonso III, and was sent to reconquer and secure from the Moors (Arabs and Berbers who had invaded Visigothic Hispania), in the west coastal fringe of Gallaecia, the area from the Minho River to the Douro River, including the city of Portus Cale, later Porto and Gaia, from where the name of Portugal emerged. Too bad the city did not thinks to put a plaque explaining the above.

Vimara Peres was a Galician nobleman born in 820, at the end of the first quarter of the century. IX. A Christian of the Reconquista, he was a knight and warlord, sent by D.Afonso III of Asturias to the Douro river valley, with the task of expelling the Moors, from the natural line whose domain the Asturo-Leonese considered fundamental for their defense.

An equestrian statue of Vímara Peres, a ninth-century nobleman from the Kingdom of Asturias and the first ruler of the first County of Portugal ("Condado Portucalense"), a medieval county in the region around Braga and Porto, today corresponding to littoral northern Portugal, within which the identity of the Portuguese people formed.

The history of the county of Portugal is traditionally dated from the reconquest of PortusCale (Porto) from the Moors by Vímara Peres in 868. He was named a count and given control of the frontier region between the Limia and Douro rivers by Alfonso III of Asturias.

A larger county under the same name was later reestablished in the late 11th century and lasted until the mid-12th century, when its count elevated it into an independent Portuguese kingdom.
