This museum provides some insight into the traveling of Diaz around the point of Africa. The museum has some really good replicas of the history during this time.
Sadly the museum has fallen into the same trap of so many other museums around the world, with most the finances going into upkeep of a smaller and smaller area of the museum. There seems to be very little evidence of continous improvement. Also, other than one or two displays in the entrance exhibitions, so little is done around displaying the intergation of the cultures in South Africa.
Very little reference is made regarding the tribes that were met along the Cape and who they were. For instance the fountain in the musuem complex provides a fantastic example of a very relevant cultural historical sight for sone of the local inhabitants, but is almost lost if not for a small...

The museum itself is interesting, but I personally felt like it was a trip back in time to the 90s; it just seemed outdated. There's a lot of potential, especially where the Dias replica ship is housed.
The museum definitely needs to be upgraded in terms of more interactive and digital exhibitions.
The Shell museum houses a large collection of shells and contains a small aquarium with a few fish, mollusk and other invertebrates exhibits. Again, these exhibits are interesting but feel way outdated.
It would be great to have some form of guided tours as well, to make the trip a learning experience as well.

Read moreI was pleasantly surprised by how much there was to see and experience at the Bartolomeu Dias Museum – all for just R10 entrance! The variety of exhibits was impressive, from the maritime displays to the Shell Museum, and even the historic Post Office Tree. It’s such a well-kept, informative, and peaceful place, perfect for both adults and kids.
One of the highlights was the life-size replica of Dias’s caravel – even though we couldn't go on board, it was still awe-inspiring to see up close. The ethnobotanical garden added a lovely natural touch to the visit, and the aquarium with live molluscs was fascinating.
Overall, this museum offers incredible value and a great way to spend a few hours soaking in some local history and nature. Highly recommend it to anyone passing through...
