The Whalebone Pier is one of the most striking features on the Umhlanga Promenade. It is, in my humble opinion, a masterpiece of form and function, where engineering and creative design come together to create something truly marvelous, and has added something to our much-loved Promenade that makes it extra special. It reaches out into the ocean from the beach, ending with a 7.5m cantilevered viewing platform- an ideal spot for photos, selfies(especially the iconic Titanic pose), look down through the grate to see and feel the waves pounding below you- a scary and awesome experience. It is very safe, there are seats along the pier to sit and enjoy those stunning views of both the warm and inviting Indian Ocean, and the people going by on the Promenade. It is pet friendly, wheel chair friendly, people friendly. When walking along the beach at any time of the day, it is almost impossible not to stop and take photos. It is a beautiful sight. It is also very safe. I usually go for a walk at sunrise, there are always people around, making the most of out great weather, fresh air. Make this a destination not to miss.๐Ÿ˜

Ok! As most know when coming to Durban, Kwazulu Natal- Umhlanga Beach, is kinda a bucket list must for most tourists, both locally and internationally. So! if you do go down to the beach, the award winning Whale Bone Pier, is a definite visit. I can't explain the breathtaking beauty and tranquillity that one experiences on this pier. You have to try it yourself! As a local, somedays hubby and I will go on the pier just to sit and take it all in... The best time to venture down, is when the weather is clear and hopefully not too busy. There's so much to see from the pier. Bring your camera if you are an avid photographer, you definitely will get some good pics. There are also benches to sit on, if you just want to rest a bit, reflect and contemplate your future plans. This is the place to do it!

Epic Sunrise spot on the Indian Ocean! It is worth it! Get up early and greet the dawn from this unique and distinctive whalebone themed structure which was awarded โ€œThe Most Beautiful Pier in the Worldโ€ by CNN in 2014. You might even be rewarded with dolphins surfing below you and whales passing through at certain times of the year. Good to know: You can buy coffee to go from the Lifesaverโ€™s Hut on the promenade from fairly early in the morning. Sunrise, really not your thing? The pier is well lit at night, above and below. Blue LED lights run along the base of the spine of the pier, it sounds horrifying but is actually quite pretty in a weird alien sort of way and is best viewed from down on the beach at night.

Whale of a time

First Time visiting this attraction and the weather was just perfect

I wasn't able to get parking access close by So I parked at the Durban view parking and had taken a lovely stroll along the promenade to get there

Surrounded by panoramic views of the Indian Ocean the Walebone pier offers some amazing photography opportunities With the Umhlanga light house in the distance and the amazing architecture that gives it an amazing atmosphere

CNN has declared this pier the World's most Beautiful pier

The seating allows for a relaxed time if you have been running or walking along the beach it's a good place to Rest and take in the beauty of the beach

The pier is actually a Stromwater drain that is used to disperse the collection of water that used to usually collect in as stagnant water...
