I recently stayed at the Protea Marriott in Durban Umhlanga and I must say, I was blown away by my experience. The hotel is situated in a prime location with stunning views of the Pearls and Radisson Blue hotel. From the moment I walked in, I felt like I was in a luxurious oasis. First and foremost, the customer service was outstanding. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and went above and beyond to ensure that my stay was comfortable and enjoyable. They were always available to answer any questions I had and were quick to respond to any requests I made. The room itself was spacious and beautifully decorated, with a comfortable bed and all the amenities I could ask for. The highlight, of course, was the breathtaking view from my window. I could have spent hours just, taking in the stunning scenery. The hotel has a great range of facilities, including a gym, pool, and restaurant. I made use of all three during my stay and was impressed by each of them. The gym was well-equipped and clean, the pool was refreshing and offered stunning views, and the restaurant had a delicious menu with a great range of options. One thing that really stood out to me was the attention to detail. The hotel had clearly thought about every aspect of the guest experience, from the high-quality toiletries in the bathroom to the complimentary tea and coffee in the room. Overall, I had a fantastic stay at the Protea Marriott in Durban Umhlanga. The hotel offered a truly luxurious experience with outstanding customer service, a beautiful room with breathtaking views, and excellent facilities. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing and indulgent getaway

I wasn't sure what to expect but I didn't have high expectations for this hotel. Parking available (not sure if they charge for it ) , but it is quiet and ample parking bays available. Got to the lift and it's quite tiny and 4 people in here will make it uncomfortable. Lucky its a short ride down to reception and as I got out, I was not blown away. Receptionist was very friendly and got the check in done quickly. Up to the rooms and the hotel is just decent. Got to the room and it's near and spacious for 2 people. Cupboards and draws available at entrance to pack clothing and stuff away. Bathroom is decent, with a decent shower nicely partitioned off by a big piece of glass. The grouting though is quite black which is evident of mold. How can they not do proper cleaning ? Amenities provided are extremely poor, like a 2 star hotel would provide. Remember I've been upgraded to a superior room (elite member) so there should have been elite offerings. They don't even have slippers to wear once the shoes are off, nor do they provide complementary drinking water. There are tiles at the entrance and bathroom, and it's winter cold, which makes it uncomfortable. The room gets quite cold during the late evenings and it can be felt early mornings, and all they can offer is a blanket, like I'm going to stay in bed all day/night 🤦‍♂️ The breakfast restaurant wasn't too bad. Being quiet I got my eggs in quick time and served my drinks quickly too. Friendly staff. All in all, I won't return to this hotel anytime soon.

Pleasant Stay, Disappointing Breakfast Experience I recently stayed at this hotel and had a generally comfortable experience. The room was good—clean, well-maintained, and suited our needs. What stood out the most was the staff; they were genuinely pleasant, friendly, and always willing to help, which made our stay more enjoyable. However, the breakfast was a major letdown, especially for vegetarians. Each morning, the only options provided were baked beans and sautéed potatoes—hardly a balanced or nutritious offering, and certainly lacking any real source of protein. When we raised our concerns with the chef, he explained that the hotel does not stock Fry’s or other soya-based products because they "only serve fresh food." At first, I thought he was joking—but sadly, he was not. This was quite ironic, considering there were always multiple types of meat sausages and other clearly frozen items available for non-vegetarians. The situation was particularly disappointing given the timing of our visit, which coincided with Geeta/Krishna week—a significant religious observance for many Hindus. Given Durban’s large Hindu population, it was surprising and frankly disheartening to see no effort made to accommodate this. It reflected a concerning lack of cultural awareness and sensitivity, especially in a diverse city like this. While the hotel gets high marks for hospitality and room quality, the poor planning around dietary needs—especially for vegetarians observing religious traditions—left a lot to be desired.

This is without a doubt the most walkable hotel in South Africa, with a massive range of restaurants, clubs, shopping and grocery stores across the street, promenade running routes, and a 10-minute walk to the beach. I’m talking A-grade Angus beef, sushi, Mediterranean, seafood, fine dining, Mexican, and avocado toast within a few hundred feet. 15-minute walk and you can walk out with a Gucci belt or a pre-owned Lambo. You can even get an ear piercing or see an aftordable doctor on the SAME BLOCK. Insane. I wish I could live in this building full-time. There are community policing guards in yellow vests in addition to local law enforcement, so you can actually walk it all safely.

Hotel rooms are above average Marriott quality with large shower and separate tub. Compare to most Westin hotels, except beach-themed with sea views. There are fewer goodies available when you walk in, but the coffee stand is top tier and I assume you can ask for toiletries at reception. The building has one of the best hotel gyms I’ve ever used with bathrooms inside the gym and all-new equipment. Hotel rooms don’t have Smart TVs which I would expect at this level. Keycard-activated elevators offer added safety since the hotel is accessible from the street.

Vastly better location compared to other chain hotels (eg. Holiday Inn, Hilton Garden Inn), and better value for money than luxury options (eg Radisson, Oyster Box Hotel or Beverly Hills). You can always eat at these hotel restaurants if you want to tack on an ultra-luxury experience.

Not great for families with young children since the pool is teacup-sized and the nightlife crowd often crashes here. I saw exactly one guest passed out in the hallway but security dealt with him swiftly and respectfully once I let them know.

Seriously, this hotel will be the best decision of your entire South African...
