Lord Prawn Fish & Grill, a cherished gem nestled in the coastal haven of Umhlanga Rocks, South Africa, is a testament to the enduring passion for seafood and hospitality. Founded in 1975 by the visionary Chemaly brothers, John and George, this establishment has remained family-owned for over four decades, with Tony Chemaly, John's son, now at the helm. What sets Lord Prawn apart is its unwavering commitment to sourcing the freshest seafood from local fishermen. The menu showcases an array of ocean treasures, including prawns, lobster, fish, and calamari, all expertly prepared to tantalize the palate. For those seeking alternatives, the restaurant offers a delightful selection of steaks, chicken, and pasta. Dining at Lord Prawn is not just about the exquisite fare; it's an experience that envelops you in a warm, nautical-themed ambiance. The cosy interior and a charming outdoor patio overlooking the beachfront provide the perfect backdrop for your culinary journey. During my recent visit to Lord Prawn, I embarked on a seafood adventure, starting with a sumptuous seafood platter that featured prawns, lobster, and Oysters. The flavors were impeccable, and the accompanying sauces were a delightful complement. For the main course, the grilled fish was a standout, perfectly cooked and served alongside fragrant rice and crisp vegetables. Service at Lord Prawn is exceptional, with knowledgeable and attentive staff who ensure your every need is met. They navigate the menu with ease and are always ready to assist. While the experience at Lord Prawn is truly remarkable, it's worth noting that the excellence comes with a price, and reservations, particularly on weekends, are highly recommended to secure your spot at this popular dining destination. In summary, Lord Prawn Fish & Grill stands as an institution in Umhlanga Rocks, beloved by locals and tourists alike. It's a place where fresh seafood reigns supreme, service is impeccable, and the atmosphere is inviting. If you're seeking a memorable seafood dining experience, look no further than Lord Prawn.

Ate here today upon returning to Durban and the food and service couldnt be better. The staff was welcoming as we walked in,sat down and until we left and always checked up on the table. ●Oysters were really amazing ●garlic butter snails(from the juicy and delicious snails to the garlic butter it was in this dish was simply perfect and as someone that loved snails it's hard to come by a restaurant that makes it right) ●line fish/catch of the day(catch of the day was a Cape salmon, the fish itself was cooked and seasoned perfectly and the sides which where chips, butternut and creamed spinach was perfect as well) ●lamb curry(the rice itself was perfectly cooked and had a aroma to it,the curry itself from the moment it hit the table you could smell all the spices already, the meat would melt in your mouth and the the flavour from the curry itself was really great,a perfect curry) ●sambal side(could really taste the freshness in it and was seasoned perfectly as well) ●chutney side(went well with all dishes ordered and was a great item to add sweetness) ●tartar sauce side(creamy and Rich and went well with the dish it was meant for) Overall a really great restaurant and atmosphere,a definite try If you are in the area.

I feel extremely disappointed that I have to place this comment on my wife's birthday. We made reservations and went to this restaurant. Yes, I looked at the reviews before booking and found that there we positives and negatives but I chose to focus on the positives however I deeply regret doing that. Today we had the worst experience ever. Let me list my bad experiences at this restaurant: I ordered the 12 LM prawn dish and was served the 1kg prawn dish which is more expensive. I notified the waiter but decided to accept it as it was already prepared. So I overlooked this mistake. But my dish was tasteless. I tried garlic butter and lemon butter to add taste but very disappointed and i told the waiter who just looked at me with no comment. I also complained to the waiter that the fresh orange juice I ordered was diluted and weak. We had different waiters attending to us without introducing who is doing what..so chaotic. My wife ordered the prawn curry with rice. She found the prawns tasteless and rubbery. No use having big prawns with no taste. She told the waiter. Before the waiter could respond, the Manager, Gerhard, shouted from the reception area behind my wife ' thats how its done. It has been done like that for the past 49 years'. Gerhard did not come to the table and chose to give his comments from behind us. This annoyed and insulted us so I told the waiter at our table how I felt and also pointed out that I now believe the negative reviews I have read about him on google reviews and Hello Peter. It was my wife's birthday and I did not appreciate the way he insulted her and he was not part of the conversation. It was already disappointing that her meal was not up to standard on her birthday. But please read on to hear how this experience ended..it will shock you! Also to note, my mum inlaw ordered the chicken and prawn curry, and she said same about the prawns being tasteless and rubbery. When she complained, the waiter mentioned "thats how they do it". The waiter said that they only steam the prawns and add it to the chutney. We requested for take away containers to pack the leftover meals. The one take away foil container had a dead cockroach in it. We were disgusted. My wife pointed it out to the waiter and he quickly dusted it on the floor. My wife insisted on a new container which came in a different size. As we sat at our table, Gerhard (Manager), approached me and questioned me about complaining about him to his staff in a raised voice and initimidating manner. He insisted on proof that there were complaints against him and that the juice was diluted. I told him to read the reviews on google and i spoke about the juice based on what I tasted. He became more arrogant and defensive saying that I am a bad father, which was out of context. Perhaps he wanted to provoke me. When we mentioned the cockroach incident to Gerhard, his response was ' tell me which restaurant does not have cockroaches'. I pointed out to him that I did not appreciate his rude behaviour. He then got closer to me to provoke an altercation and raised his voice again over the discussion with the waiter. This made me raise my voice to tell him that we speak of facts and he does not intimidate me. He then mentioned he will call the police so we insisted he does as we did nothing wrong. He just could not handle the constructive criticism. He then asked us to pay and leave. Such rude and disgusting behaviour. We paid our full bill that included the 10% tip, totalled over R2400 as we did not go for a free meal and have exercised our right to voice our opinion on the service and quality of food that we paid for. Gerhard lacks respect and customer service.I will definitely Not Recommend Lord Prawn Fish & Grill...

We booked at Lord Prawn Fish & Grill (LPF&G) in Umhlanga, for my Mum's birthday. Atmosphere was warm and rustic with not much thought given to social distancing protocols, however, the waiters did wear face masks. My hubby is currently fasting for Purattasi and therefore, we advised the waiter who was responsible for our meals order of same (FYI: they have a separate waiter to cater for your drinks and a separate waiter to cater for your meals). Starters went well, we ordered the chicken livers peri-peri, which was supposed to be accompanied with brown bread (as per our meal waiter), however, this never came (minor oversight), so we ate it as is. Hubby ordered a cheesy garlic bread and black mushroom in a creamy sauce, which was AMAZING!!! Way better than our chicken livers in fact. Drinks were efficient and as expected (Passion fruit and lemonade, cola tonic and hubby had a milkshake). For mains, we ordered the 1kg queen prawns and the platter for two, which comes with 3 sauces that you can use as your palate desires (butter, garlic and peri-peri). Hubby and myself stressed to the waiter (Not sure of his name) that he was fasting and asked for veg pasta options, which was discussed and as per the waiter's suggestion, we went with the Fettuccini Caliente. However, this is where the problem began. As Hubby ate, he said, "It tastes like mince", and of course, I said no way and tasted it myself. To which it also tasted like mince to me, we then called the drinks waiter as he was the only one who was constantly passing our table. Once we brought this to his attention, he advised us that the dish does in fact come with mince in the bolognaise sauce!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hubby was devastated and I was completely and utterly upset. Despite us stressing this to the meals waiter, it somehow did not register that "veg" option means NO MEAT. The drinks waiter apologized profusely and offered another meal option, to which, Hubby replied, no thanks, obviously, losing his appetite together with mine. For those Hindu's that observe and fast during the month of Purattasi, you will understand how devastated my Hubby was, despite it being unintentional. I honestly could not tell you if my meal was good or not because, I just felt so bad that I could hardly eat thereafter. This is where it got worse. The meals waiter responsible for the mess up was too scared to return to our table to even apologize for his big error. I watched as he checked up on other tables and completely ignored ours thereafter. The drinks waiter was the only one coming to our table and checking up on us. The manager also failed to visit our table and apologize on behalf of his waiter for making such a big mistake. I understand mistakes happen, but that lack of empathy and sincerity just displayed a "don't care" attitude and lack of respect for other's in my book. To not have the decency to even say "I am sorry", is beyond disappointing! Yes, the meal was removed from our slip (rightfully so), and the drinks waiter processed our final bill and payment. And that was that, we left. Poor form Lord Prawn Fish & Grill. I expected much more from your...
