On our first visit the flies were problematic - we could not eat in peace without swatting flies away (inside the resturant glass section) and their candles did nothing. Even when moved to the bar side (when we complained about the flies)... the flies eventually found us... The owners also need to invest in air conditioning (our waiters told us there was none) or, at the very least, fans for inside the resturant; it's not pleasant on a hot day (and could perhaps contribute to helping the fly problem).
Our second visit was on a day it was rainy (the resturant was in our hotel so we thought, hey let's try again) we sat outside in a covered section (so no fly issues with the rain) but unfortunately the one main meal was not prepared in line with the menu (at all). We intiially thought perhaps we made an error and went with it (as one does on the assumption the resturant knows their menu - because our first thought was we misread the menu so hence the dish that was served) but it was unpleasant oil drenched battered fish. So after spending time scrapping all the oily batter off and trying to salvage bits of oily fish (for some illogical reason) we were motivated to double check with our waiter and were correct - the fish was meant to be grilled not battered and fried in oil (our mistake was not questioning it from the beginning). The manager at least apologised and provided us with complimentary drinks so at least an effort was made.
However, improvements definitely need to be made and steps taken to create a more pleasant dining experience (the small details and efforts made can set a resturant apart from others and make you want to go back and continue going back). I would hesitate to go back...
Read moreJoie de Vivre! (Joy of Life) with the staff of Hussar Grill and quality. It was the best of times and it was the best of times... Inoc our waiter and staff immediately made us feel welcome at this cozy spot in Franschhoek. From start to finish the attention to detail and to customer was something I have not felt in a long time in the dining experiences of late. Thank you for giving me that feeling back. We had our Oumas from different countries meeting with the grandkids. Inoc, made them feel as special as well to the little kids with explanation of food options and styles. There was a time where my mom thought the one of the menu items was a bit spicy than advertised and Inoc and staff sorted her out in the most professional and nice way to my 81 year old mom. Talking to Inoc in French (some bias here) also won points for when I was chatting to him on the different regional wines in French. Also gave that slight extra touch of Franschoek magic. Thanks guys for making our dinner so special tonight. We have been here 2x before staying at the Protea, and our family look forward to coming through more often to the Hussar and hope to see Inoc and staff again soon! Happy...
Read moreWent there for my father in law 65th birthday. We left another restaurant to celebrate here, in hopes there was some sort of vibe. There was no vibe to speak of, no subtle music in the back ground, we were seated right in front of the kitchen, most seats were reserved however during our time there nobody utilized those seats. My daughter ordered mussels which was chewy to say the least the chef came back to apologize as he realised this himself after he tasted it. Mussels were white instead of orange. I asked if these are different types of mussels as I've never seen it this white/ Grey before. . I ordered a steak which had to be taken back twice, due to getting the order wrong. They do not have skillets therefore do not order a hot rock you will be given a warm plate. On the 3rd attempt, I just accepted it as I couldn't hold out any more due to hunger. I usually do not critize restaurants this hard, but we tried to make the best of it seeing that it was a special occasion. Best MEALS were the birthday ice-cream, chicken livers and chateaubriand, I am led to...
