Namdaemun Market: A Chaotic Yet Rewarding Experience Namdaemun Market, one of Seoul's oldest and largest traditional markets, offers a unique and bustling shopping experience. While it's a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, opinions on it vary. Pros: Wide Variety of Goods: From clothing and electronics to food and household items, Namdaemun Market offers an extensive range of products. Bargaining Opportunities: The market is known for its competitive prices, and visitors can often bargain for better deals. Authentic Korean Experience: Exploring Namdaemun Market provides a glimpse into the everyday life of Koreans and their shopping habits. Cons: Crowded and Chaotic: The market can be extremely crowded, especially during peak hours, making it difficult to navigate and shop comfortably. Limited English: Many vendors may not speak English, which can make communication challenging for foreign visitors. Quality Variations: While the market offers a wide variety of products, quality can vary, and it's important to inspect items carefully before purchasing. Overall: Namdaemun Market is a fascinating place to explore, but it's important to be prepared for the crowds and potential challenges. If you're willing to navigate the chaos and enjoy the bargaining experience, you might find it a rewarding and memorable visit. However, if you prefer a more relaxed shopping experience, you might want to consider other markets or shopping malls in Seoul.

Market area which seems to cater to fashion and jewelry enthusiasts. It is also supposed to be a shopping haven for kids. We saw a Clover Castle labelled as a 'kids department store'. We didn't go in as we went there specifically for the one special accessory which is a staple for hijab-wearing, female Malay Muslims - brooches. And sparkly ones at that. Saw on reviews about this market that said brooches are available at e-lengdang mall. But nobody had any specific directions for it. I can't provide one also unfortunately, but all I had to do was ask one of the tourist guides that was standing around in their red shirts, just waiting to help tourists. The building is light green, the whole second floor is dedicated to earrings, necklaces and rings - stalls and stalls and rows and rows of them. You have to do a bit of hunting to get to the brooches but once you get to the section, there should be a few around. All the brooches are handmade - I needed an extra brooch of the same colour, and after finding that she ran out of it, the seller quickly made another one for me. I bought close to 30 pieces of various sizes from 2 different vendors and paid about 200,000 won, when buying them in my country would probably have cost me almost as much for half the number of brooches. Great as souvenirs!

Coming from the vibrant city of San Francisco, I didn't expect to be swept away by the bustling energy of another market so easily. Yet, Namdaemun Market (남대문시장) in Seoul was a sensory overload in the best possible way. While I've tasted 붕어빵 (fish-shaped red bean sweet) back home at Costco in California, nothing compares to savoring it right in the heart of Seoul. It's not just about the food, but the ambiance that comes with it. The aroma of freshly baked 붕어빵 wafting through the air, the sound of sizzling street food, and the chatter of vendors and visitors alike; it's an experience, a vibe that you simply can't replicate. The market is a sprawling maze of shops, each with its unique offerings, from clothes to trinkets, and everything in between. The energy here is infectious, a testament to Seoul's dynamic spirit. It's a blend of the old and new, where traditional stalls stand proudly beside contemporary shops. For anyone visiting Seoul, especially those from the Bay Area like me who thrive on energy and urban excitement, Namdaemun Market is a must-visit. Dive into the heart of Korean culture, taste its flavors, and immerse yourself in its lively rhythm. Highly recommended for an authentic tourism experience!

If you are Malaysian, similar to Petaling Street but the quality of goods here are much better, wider choices, more organised, and affordable in KRW. For my many past visit to Seoul, usually always visited the accesories/brooch wholesales at E-Lendeng building (painted in green). Those who loves brooch for headscarf (hijab)/ scarf, you may visit lot number 207. Simply asked them where is lot 207, they will pointed for you. Bare in mind, inside the building they hv hundreds lots or maybe thousands, so very important for u to rmbr the lot number. This round we went up to florist wholesales floor and household. As a big fan of household item, you may get unique things over here or for your house decorations. In terms of prices, the price inside the building is cheaper compare to outside. If you like something inside the building, recommended that you buy it at once, trust me, it is not easy for you to look for the same shop again as the shoplot inside is like a maze and you may get confuse with their layout. If you go early morning like 8am, place not crowded yet so u can walk peacefully. The place will be crowded from 11am onwards.
