CASA AMATLLER

Casa Amatller is another architectural gem in Barcelona, Spain, located right next to Casa Batlló on Passeig de Gràcia. It is a striking example of the Catalan Modernisme movement but is distinct in its style, as it incorporates a mix of Gothic and Flemish influences.

Key Features:

Architect:

• Designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch in 1898–1900 for Antoni Amatller, a wealthy chocolatier and art collector.

Architectural Highlights:

• Facade:

• The building is known for its step-gabled roof, a design inspired by traditional Flemish architecture.

• The intricate stonework includes Gothic-style arches, floral carvings, and symbolic sculptures.

• Features colorful ceramic tiles that add to its decorative appeal.

• Windows and Balcony:

• The large stained-glass windows and ornate ironwork balconies showcase the craftsmanship of the time.

• Entrance:

• The grand entrance is flanked by mythological creatures and includes a wrought-iron lamp that reflects Modernisme aesthetics.

• Interior:

• Inside, the house is richly decorated with mosaics, stained glass, and coffered ceilings, reflecting the wealth and taste of the Amatller family.

Cultural Significance:

• Block of Discord: Casa Amatller is part of the famous “Illa de la Discòrdia” (Block of Discord), where it stands beside Casa Batlló (Gaudí) and Casa Lleó Morera (Domènech i Montaner), showcasing the competing styles of Barcelona’s leading Modernisme architects.

• Chocolate Heritage: Antoni Amatller was a renowned chocolatier, and the building housed his family home and business office. Today, chocolate-making is celebrated as part of the building’s history.

Restoration and Museum:

• After a meticulous restoration, Casa Amatller is now open to the public as a museum.

• Visitors can explore the Amatller family’s original living spaces, preserved in their early 20th-century grandeur, including furniture, artwork, and personal items.

Visiting Tips:

• Guided Tours: Guided tours provide insights into the history, architecture, and life of the Amatller family.

DO NOT PAY ANYTHING IN ADVANCE! I did - I did not get the visit and also was NOT REFUNDED MY MONEY! DISCRIMINATORY AND TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! I was deceived with paying 18€ in advance which at the moment I still did not receive after I had booked and PAID in full 4 days ago for a GUIDED tour on Saturday, Merce holidays 11am. Postponed plans with friends and woke up very early to be able to do house chores and arrive 10.50 for the visit to find out there was ABSOLUTELY NO VISIT scheduled, and the only thing they offered was an audio guide later in the day. Berta, the worst employee of the year - had convinced me to take the guided tour so I ask questions - in SPANISH also discriminating other guides knowledge. Speaking English is NOT LESS knowledge Berta. Having people pay for nothing is INCOMPETENCY and you are the perfect example - also vanitous to allow yourself to say someone speaking English will have a less valuable insight. Why is it the same price for the guide then? If it s worse quality? Anyway - I was not refunded the money until now, they even refused to let me in for free to the whole bothering to be there for nothing, they litteraly did care. I asked for the chocolate box which was promised on the tour - not even that. So basically, you messed my whole Saturday morning and friday evening as I did not stay late to be ok with the visit - so just to be mocked by Casa Ametller. NOT RECOMMEND - terrible customer service, terrible organisation and until now - apparently keeping people’s money and not offering...

Wonderful house! I loved the visit there. I took the audioguide and this is very interesting. I really preferred this house to the Batllo and Milas houses. If you are in Barcelona, I would strongly recommend you to visit it. The style is very different to Gaudi's style, but I really liked it. Take the audioguide, enjoy your visit and make sure that you take the hot Amatller chocolate, it is really worth it and it is less expensive if you buy it with your visit ticket. Make also sure you go to the shop, they sell very nice chocolate. If your hotel is nearby, I also recommend you to not take the breakfast at your hotel and to go to the Amatller coffee place every morning: there is an inside courtyard, which is really lovely and the breakfast is great there: healthy options available, not too pricey and really lovely. It opens at 8:00 o'clock in the morning (the museum at 10.00). This was one of my favourite places during my stay in Barcelona!! I loved it! And the people there are really available for you (contrary to the...

The house itself is undeniably beautiful, showcasing stunning architecture and intricate design elements that captivate the eye. However, in my opinion, the experience is extremely overpriced. I should mention that I’m not an architect or designer, nor do I have any professional connections in these fields. While the aesthetics of the house are impressive, many other tourist attractions in this city offer a much richer experience at a significantly lower cost. If you haven't visited them yet, I highly recommend exploring those options first. One major drawback of this attraction is that you only get to visit one floor of the entire building. This is quite limited, especially when compared to Casa Batlló, where you can explore the whole place and truly immerse yourself in its splendor. While the house is a visual delight, the high admission price and limited access to the building left me feeling somewhat underwhelmed. There are certainly better and more value-for-money attractions in the city that should be prioritized.

It was built for Antoni Amatller, a wealthy chocolatier who wanted a home that reflected both his refined taste and artistic passion. The façade combines Catalan Gothic elements with Nordic influences, making it a unique gem on the iconic Passeig de Gràcia. Inside, the house preserves original furniture, stained glass, and even the family’s personal belongings—offering an authentic glimpse into upper-class life in early 20th-century Barcelona. Unlike many touristy spots, this building feels like a true time capsule. A visit here isn’t just about architecture—it’s about stepping into a beautifully preserved piece of Barcelona’s cultural and artistic history.
